A Shelf warehouse rave in Milwaukee that happens every Saturday in a different abandoned industrial space along the Menomonee River, organized by a DJ collective called the Seventh Day who believe that dance music is a labor movement and that the weekend belongs to the workers. The name is always Warehouse 7, regardless of which warehouse they're in — the number refers to the seventh day, the day of rest, the day you dance. Setup starts at sundown: a sound system loaded on a flatbed truck, lighting rigs powered by portable generators, and whatever architectural features the chosen warehouse provides. Some weeks it's a cavernous empty space; other weeks it's a maze of shelving and equipment that creates an accidental labyrinth.

Warehouse 7 charges no cover — the Seventh Day philosophy holds that access to communal dance is a right, not a privilege. Revenue comes from donations, a small bar selling cheap drinks from coolers, and the sale of Seventh Day merchandise that has become a minor fashion phenomenon in the Shelf. The music is house, techno, and industrial — beat-driven, repetitive, designed to be danced to for hours. The crowd is predominantly Shelf working class, and the energy on a good night is transcendent: a thousand people moving together in a space that was built for storing things, repurposed for joy.
