Armour Square was always small — a compressed district defined by the things pressed against it: the expressway, the railyards, the stadium, Chinatown. When the compression intensified under corporate sovereignty, the Steelyard did not expand. It densified. Every cubic meter of the district is in use. Buildings grow inward and downward, subdivided and sub-subdivided until the original architecture is just a shell containing a honeycomb of activity. The White Sox stadium became a Rictus Entertainment franchise venue — the Rictus Yard — and its footprint dominates the district like a cathedral dominates a medieval village, except the religion here is spectacle and the congregation pays by the minute.
Chinatown survived by becoming essential. When the corporate sovereignty treaties disrupted conventional supply chains, the Chinatown merchant networks — which had been operating parallel import systems for decades — became the most reliable logistics infrastructure in the lower South Side.
