Armour Square was always small — a compressed district defined by the things pressed against it: the expressway, the railyards, the stadium, Chinatown. When the compression intensified under corporate sovereignty, the Steelyard did not expand. It densified. Every cubic meter of the district is in use. Buildings grow inward and downward, subdivided and sub-subdivided until the original architecture is just a shell containing a honeycomb of activity. The White Sox stadium became a Rictus Entertainment franchise venue — the Rictus Yard — and its footprint dominates the district like a cathedral dominates a medieval village, except the religion here is spectacle and the congregation pays by the minute.

Chinatown survived by becoming essential. When the corporate sovereignty treaties disrupted conventional supply chains, the Chinatown merchant networks — which had been operating parallel import systems for decades — became the most reliable logistics infrastructure in the lower South Side. Kelpline Logistics tried to formalize a partnership; the Chinatown Merchant Association accepted the contract and then proceeded to fulfill it on their own terms, using Kelpline's corporate charter as legal cover for a logistics operation that Kelpline's actual managers barely understand. The result is a district within a district: Chinatown Gate, three blocks of dense commercial activity where the signage is in Cantonese and Mandarin, the food is real, the supply chains reach across the Pacific, and the Merchant Association's authority is absolute.

The Rictus Yard hosts combat sports, drone races, and neural-experience competitions — entertainment engineered for maximum audience engagement, which in practice means maximum violence calibrated to the threshold of what corporate liability insurance will cover. On game days, the Steelyard's population triples as spectators flood in from across GLMZ. The streets become a carnival of food vendors, ticket scalpers, and pickpockets. The Merchant Association tolerates this because the influx of credit funds Chinatown's actual operations. Rictus Entertainment tolerates the Merchant Association because the food and logistics support make the Yard functional. It is a symbiosis built on mutual exploitation, and it works.

Between the Yard and the Gate, in the compressed residential blocks where the district's permanent population lives, the Steelyard is simply dense — human density, architectural density, density of sound and smell and transaction. Every hallway is a market. Every stairwell is a meeting place. The expressway that once bisected the neighborhood was enclosed and converted into a covered thoroughfare lined with vendor stalls, creating an indoor street that never closes and never sleeps. The Steelyard is not comfortable. It is not quiet. It is not beautiful. But it is alive in a way that the corporate districts above it will never be, because everything here exists because someone needed it to.
