The Oxidian Shelf
A sprawling industrial terrace suspended between two decommissioned Ringo Heavy Industries smelting complexes along the southern lakefront, The Oxidian Shelf is a patchwork of corroded gantries, salvaged hab-modules, and improvised market stalls that cling to the rusted superstructure like barnacles. Built vertically over three generations of squatter engineering, it defies both gravity and municipal zoning codes with equal indifference.
Once a staging ground for ore barges servicing the old Chicago steel corridor, the Shelf was abandoned by Ringo in 2158 and colonized almost immediately by displaced Tier 4 workers and Shelf-adjacent families fleeing encroaching Ferrogate Security cordons. Its residents have jury-rigged power from nearby Zheng-Dao Bioelectric substations and pipe treated lake water through networks of improvised conduit, creating a chaotic but functional micro-economy sustained entirely outside corporate oversight.

| atmosphere |
| ||||||||||
| demographics | Predominantly Tier 4 and Shelf-adjacent residents, with a significant population of undocumented synthetic persons and first-generation migrants from Southeast Asia, West Africa, and the Gulf Corridor. Population density is extreme, with an estimated 14,000 residents across roughly 0.4 square kilometers of vertical space. | ||||||||||
| economy | Driven by salvage trading, unlicensed BCI modification services, gray-market fabrication, and informal labor brokerage connecting residents to day-work in adjacent industrial zones. Φ circulates alongside barter and community credit tokens printed by local mutual aid collectives. | ||||||||||
| power structure | A loose council of block representatives called the Gantry Board mediates disputes and negotiates collectively with Ferrogate Security to keep formal patrols off the structure. In practice, two rival salvage brokers—one human, one synthetic—hold significant economic leverage over the lower and upper tiers respectively. | ||||||||||
