The Nearfield
The Near South Side was always transitional — a district caught between the Loop's gravity and the South Side's reality, accumulating institutions the way a river bend accumulates debris. It is comfortable. It is surveilled. It is the life that the corporate system offers its compliant middle, and from the upper floors you can see the lake, and if you look south you can see the districts where the compliant middle ends and something else begins.
