The Mill
Muskegon was a lumber town, then a manufacturing town, then a town that wasn't sure what it was. By 2200 it has finally figured it out: Muskegon is a machine. Specifically, it is a machine for moving things from the lake to the land and from the land to the lake, and for processing whatever passes through its gears in between.
The port -- now operated by Axiom Industries' Great Lakes Logistics Division -- handles 30% of all eastern Lake Michigan cargo traffic. The old lumber mill sites along Muskegon Lake have been converted into automated processing facilities: raw materials arrive by cargo ship, are sorted by AI-managed systems, loaded onto maglev freight cars, and distributed inland along the corridor before a human hand touches any of it. The efficiency is remarkable. The employment figures are not. Axiom's port operations employ roughly 800 people in a city of 60,000, and most of those positions are supervisory roles monitoring systems that could monitor themselves.
What Muskegon has that automation can't replace is geography. The Muskegon Lake channel is the deepest harbor on the eastern shore, capable of receiving cargo vessels that can't dock anywhere between here and the Straits. This makes the Mill a chokepoint -- and chokepoints breed economies. The harbor district is a dense, rough, functional zone of bars, equipment suppliers, repair docks, and the kind of services that people who spend weeks on automated cargo ships need when they finally hit land. It's not pretty. It doesn't try to be. Muskegon has the honest ugliness of a place that does real work, and there is a certain respect in the lakefront communities for a town that never pretended to be anything other than what it is.
