Fulton Market survived its transformation into a corporate food-tech corridor by becoming something stranger than anyone planned. The old meatpacking infrastructure was repurposed for synthetic protein production, and the restaurants that once served Φ200 tasting menus now serve engineered cuisine to Tier 3 and 4 workers on lunch breaks from the nearby corporate campuses. But beneath the sanitized surface, the original market culture persists in basement kitchens and back-alley food stalls where analog ingredients — real vegetables, actual animal protein — command prices that would make the old Fulton Market restaurateurs weep. Greektown compressed into a four-block enclave where the descendants of the original community run neural-interface taverns that serve ouzo alongside memory-sharing experiences curated from a century of immigrant nostalgia.

The UIC campus became a Tessera Corponation research annex in the 2050s, its academic mission officially preserved but practically subordinated to corporate R&D priorities. Students still attend, but their research belongs to Tessera before the ink dries. The campus perimeter is a hard jurisdiction line — step off the sidewalk and your legal rights change mid-stride. This makes the blocks immediately surrounding UIC some of the most legally complex terrain in GLMZ, a landscape where freelancers and fixers thrive because nobody can agree on whose law applies.

The Garret's defining feature is density of contradiction. Corporate workers eat lunch next to untier-ed refugees. Research labs share walls with unlicensed clinics. The Tessera Colosseum broadcasts combat sports to millions while, three blocks away, people fight for real in disputes that no jurisdiction will adjudicate. It is the most honest district in GLMZ, because it makes no attempt to pretend that any of this makes sense.
