Lincoln Spear
Lincoln Spear is the district where wealth learned to grow thorns. Old Lincoln Park was Chicago's jewel — the zoo, the conservatory, DePaul University's leafy campus, brownstones whose price tags required six figures just for the down payment. When the Corporate Reconstruction sorted Meridian into tiers, Lincoln Park's existing wealth made the transition almost seamlessly. The residents who could afford to stay became Tier 3 and 4. The residents who couldn't were encouraged to relocate with the kind of encouragement that involves changing the locks. The neighborhood didn't fall. It rose — and then it built walls to make sure nothing could pull it back down.
The Lincoln Park Zoo is still here, though what it contains has changed. The megafauna are gone — too expensive to maintain when the climate shifted and supply chains collapsed. In their place: bioengineered specimens from Meridian's pharmaceutical and genetics corporations, housed in the zoo as a combination of public relations showcase and living patent library. Visitors can observe animals that don't exist in nature — luminescent arctic foxes, miniature elephants the size of dogs, birds that sing corporate jingles encoded into their vocal patterns. The conservatory has been converted to a sealed-environment agricultural laboratory where Axiom-subsidiary Verdant Dynamics tests crop strains that may never feed anyone outside the upper tiers. The grounds are immaculate. The admission fee requires Tier 3 credentials. The message is clear: nature is a luxury good, and you're welcome to look but not to touch.
DePaul University survived the reconstruction by becoming something its Vincentian founders would not recognize: a corporate training academy. The campus is intact — the old brick buildings, the tree-lined paths, even the chapel — but the curriculum is Axiom-approved, the student body is Tier 3 and above, and the degrees conferred are effectively corporate certifications with academic window dressing. The faculty are compliant because compliance is a condition of employment, and the few who push back find their contracts terminated with the polite efficiency that Axiom applies to all its optimization projects. Students emerge fluent in corporate culture, competent in their specializations, and largely incapable of questioning the system that produced them. It's the most successful education program in Meridian, by every metric that matters to the people who define the metrics.

The security systems, the credential checks, the cultural assumption that anyone from below who appears in the Spear must be there on a work permit — these things are invisible to the people they protect and obvious to everyone else. Kyle has been in the Spear exactly twice, both times on contract, both times pretending to be someone with better credentials. He doesn't like it here. It's too clean.
