Street Custom 'Nail Biter' Pipe Pistol
A single-shot pistol made from a short length of steel pipe, a nail for a firing pin, and a rubber-band-powered striker mechanism. The Nail Biter fires a single .22 or .25 caliber round from a barrel that may or may not be straight, through a chamber that may or may not seal properly, using a firing pin that may or may not strike the primer centered. The weapon represents the absolute minimum viable firearm — the least amount of material and engineering required to make a thing that shoots a bullet.

Nail Biters are the most common weapon in the Shelf, produced in quantities that no tracking system can quantify. The materials cost less than Φ5, the assembly requires no tools beyond a file and pliers, and the instructions have been passed through the community for generations. Every teenager in the Shelf knows how to build one. Most of them have built one. The quality varies from functional to suicidal — some Nail Biters will fire reliably for fifty rounds, while others will blow apart on the first shot.

The weapon's single-round capacity is its defining tactical limitation and its cultural significance. A Nail Biter gives you one shot. One chance to solve whatever problem requires a bullet. This makes every trigger pull a deliberate choice — you can't spray and pray with a weapon that needs to be reloaded by unscrewing the barrel and inserting another round. Nail Biter violence in the Shelf is almost always intentional, personal, and close-range.

tactical useContact-range self-defense and personal violence. The Nail Biter is not a combat weapon — it is a tool for a single, specific, close-range act. Users point it at someone within arm's reach and fire, hoping the mechanism functions as intended.
cultural contextThe Nail Biter is the Shelf's universal equalizer. It doesn't matter how poor you are — you can build one. It doesn't matter how weak you are — it fires the same bullet. The weapon's ubiquity has created a social dynamic where every interaction in the lowest tiers carries the theoretical possibility that the other person has a pipe gun in their pocket. This mutual deterrence is crude but functional.

story hooks
  • A corporate executive was killed by a .22 round from a Nail Biter — a Φ5 weapon defeating Φ50,000 worth of personal security. The shooter walked up during a public appearance, fired once, and disappeared into the crowd. The investigation has no leads because the weapon was discarded and is indistinguishable from plumbing.
  • A Shelf school has confiscated 40 Nail Biters from students in a single semester. The children aren't building them for violence — they're building them for protection against the violence that follows them to school.

physical description
visual profileA crude, skeletal pistol that looks like it was assembled from plumbing scraps. The barrel is a short steel pipe with one end roughly finished. The grip is minimal — barely more than a wrapped handle protruding from the rear. No trigger guard. No safety. The whole device suggests maximum lethality with zero refinement.
dimensionsOverall length 120-150mm. Barrel length 60-100mm. Grip width 25-30mm. Chamber depth approximately 40mm.
weight descriptionLight and unbalanced — the barrel end is noticeably heavier than the grip, creating a forward-heavy feel that requires a firm grip to manage. Sits uncomfortable in the palm.
primary materialLow-grade steel pipe (likely salvaged from industrial scrap). The firing pin is a bent galvanized nail. The striker mechanism uses rubber bands — visible, worn, sometimes double-wrapped.
finishBare steel with oxidation staining, inconsistent filing marks where the chamber was crudely bored. No polish, no coating. Some examples show surface rust. Others bear fresh file scratches from recent assembly.
color schemeGunmetal gray with orange-rust streaking. Accent of dull red rubber bands wrapped around the striker assembly.
grip textureBare steel or wrapped with electrical tape, frayed cord, or athletic tape — whatever the builder had available. Rough, non-slip by necessity. Some examples show bare grip with corrosion and skin oil staining.
distinctive features
  • Nail firing pin, visibly bent and protruding slightly through the chamber wall
  • Rubber band striker mechanism fully exposed — no housing, no shroud
  • Uneven barrel bore — visible light variance when looking down the muzzle
  • Chamber threads where the barrel screws into the grip assembly
  • Crude file marks and drill-bit chatter visible on all surfaces
  • No ejection port — rounds removed by unscrewing the barrel
  • Occasional knife scratches or notch marks indicating reload count or user tally
manufacturer markingsNone. 'Street Custom' is a production philosophy, not a brand stamped on the weapon. Possibly crude initials scratched into the grip by the builder — two or three letters indicating maker or owner.
condition typicalWell-used and weathered. Patina on the barrel. Rubber bands replaced multiple times (visible indentations and wear marks). Some flaking rust. The grip wrap is always failing — tape peeling, cord fraying. Functionally maintained but aesthetically neglected.
image promptProduct photograph of a crude improvised steel pipe pistol (Nail Biter), single-round capacity, laid across a scarred concrete surface. Bare steel barrel with orange oxidation, rubber-band striker mechanism fully visible, wrapped tape grip with fraying edges. Dramatic side-lighting revealing file marks and corrosion texture. Dark industrial background. Neo-noir street weapon aesthetic. Shot from above at 45 degrees. Include small details: bent nail firing pin, chamber threads, wear marks. Gritty, unrefined, lethal minimalism. --ar 3:2 --v 6
