The net's edges carry tungsten weights that wrap around the target upon impact, and the polymer mesh contracts slightly as it cools from deployment temperature, tightening around the subject's body. A single NL-6 net can immobilize an adult human for 3-5 minutes — long enough for security personnel to approach and apply conventional restraints.

TESSERA designed the Web Caster for high-value capture operations where the target must be taken alive and uninjured. The net itself causes no physical damage — it restrains without striking, compresses without crushing, and immobilizes without the electrical discharge or chemical exposure of other less-lethal systems. This makes it the preferred tool for apprehending individuals who have value — corporate assets, witnesses, hostages, and anyone whose injuries would create liability.

The weapon's limitation is its single-shot design and its vulnerability to edged tools. The polymer net can be cut with any sharp blade in under 10 seconds, meaning the Web Caster is only effective against targets who are unarmed, surprised, or both. Against a prepared target with a knife, the net is a momentary inconvenience. TESSERA's response to this limitation was the NL-6B variant, which coats the net polymer in a contact adhesive that bonds to skin and clothing, making cutting the net a process that also involves cutting yourself free of your own clothes.
