Carrion Defense Works CGL-1 'Basilisk'
A smart-linked single-shot grenade launcher with an integrated fire control system that programs airburst fuzes in real time. The operator designates a target through the weapon's optic, the fire control calculates range and trajectory, and programs the 40mm round's electronic fuze to detonate at the precise point in space where fragmentation will be most effective. The result is grenades that explode directly above targets behind cover, in windows, or around corners — places that conventional grenade launchers cannot reliably reach.

Carrion developed the Basilisk for urban operations where targets shelter behind barriers that would stop direct-fire weapons. The programmable airburst capability means that no cover shorter than a sealed overhead structure provides protection — walls, vehicles, dumpsters, and barricades are all rendered irrelevant by a weapon that detonates its payload in the air above them. The psychological effect on targets is severe: the knowledge that your cover means nothing fundamentally changes how people fight.

base technologies
  • Real-time fuze programming
  • Integrated laser rangefinder
  • Ballistic computer with wind correction
specificationscaliber: 40mm programmable airburst
capacity: 1 round
effective range: 50-800 meters
airburst accuracy: +/- 0.5 meters at 400m
weight: 4.1 kg
length: 750mm
fire control: Integrated ballistic computer with laser rangefinder
tactical usePrecision area denial against fortified targets. Each round costs Φ800, making the Basilisk a surgical tool rather than a suppression weapon. Operators use it to eliminate specific high-value targets behind cover, or to clear room interiors through windows without entering.
cultural contextThe Basilisk has earned a reputation as an assassin's tool disguised as military ordnance. A weapon that can place a fragmentation burst inside a specific room from 400 meters away is, functionally, a precision killing tool with explosive radius. The distinction between grenade launcher and guided weapon becomes academic at this level of accuracy.
known users
  • Carrion Defense Works demonstration teams
  • Elite corporate strike units
  • At least one known freelance assassin operating in GLMZ
story hooks
  • Three separate assassinations across GLMZ used identical Basilisk airburst profiles — same detonation height, same fragmentation pattern, same fire control signature. One weapon, one operator, three targets who had nothing in common except that they were all about to testify in the same corporate tribunal.
  • A Basilisk round detonated inside a sealed room with no windows and no line of sight from any exterior position. Either the fire control system has capabilities Carrion hasn't disclosed, or someone found a way to program the round after it was in flight.

physical description
visual profileA compact, purposeful single-shot grenade launcher with a distinctly angular profile. The weapon appears almost skeletal — all business, no wasted form. The barrel dominates visually, a thick 40mm cylinder that tapers slightly toward the muzzle. The breech and receiver assembly behind it are dense and complex, bristling with sensor arrays and control surfaces. Overall impression: predatory and intelligent, like a raptor's head cocked to strike.
dimensions750mm total length; 40mm bore diameter; receiver width approximately 85mm; grip-to-trigger 320mm
weight descriptionSolid and purposeful at 4.1 kg — hefty enough to feel substantial and planted, but not so heavy as to be unwieldy. The weight sits forward in the barrel and breech, giving it a natural shouldering balance. Feels expensive.
primary materialReinforced polymer composite (titanium-reinforced thermoplastic) for the lower receiver and furniture; steel and hardened aluminum alloy for the barrel assembly and breech block; carbon-fiber reinforced polymer for the rail system
finishMatte tactical black with areas of brushed gunmetal gray on the breech and receiver internals. Weathered in field units — scuff marks on the polymer, micro-scratches on exposed metal that reveal underlying silver. Some wear is tactical (gripping points polished from use), other damage accidental.
color schemePrimary: flat black. Accents: gunmetal gray, matte steel, with faint amber LED indicators visible in the optic housing when powered
grip textureTextured rubberized polymer with slight cooling ridges — designed for gloved manipulation in any condition. Grip angle is aggressive, forward-canted at 25 degrees. Cool to the touch even after sustained use.
distinctive features
  • Integrated optic mount with visible laser rangefinder aperture (tiny crimson lens inset into upper receiver)
  • Recessed LED status indicators along the receiver side — usually dark, glow amber/red when active
  • Heat vents along the barrel jacket in a honeycomb pattern
  • Three-position safety lever on the trigger guard (visible and chunky for gloved operation)
  • Quick-detach breach panel with redundant manual safety catch
  • Internal ballistic computer case — visible as a slight bulge behind the optic, sealed with micro-rivets
  • Picatinny rail running full length of upper receiver for accessory mounting
  • Fuze programming port (recessed USB-C equivalent) on the right side of the receiver, sealed with a rubber cap tethered to the weapon
manufacturer markingsCARRION DEFENSE WORKS logo (stylized carrion bird skull) stamped in white on the left side of the lower receiver. Serial number engraved on the breech block (visible from the side). Caliber marking (40MM PROG AIRBURST) stamped on the barrel in small sans-serif text. Legal disclaimer micro-etched on the trigger guard.
condition typicalWell-maintained in military/corporate hands; field-worn but never neglected. Polymer shows minor dings and scuffs. Optical elements are always kept clean — a smudged optic on a Basilisk means mission failure. Black market examples show jury-rigging: aftermarket rails, corroded fuze ports from moisture, tape over cracked polymer sections. Tier 5 units are often visibly abused — rust blooms on the breech, chipped barrel muzzle, but kept functionally lethal.
image promptClose-up product photography of the Carrion Defense Works CGL-1 'Basilisk' grenade launcher. Weapon mounted on a dark matte-black gunsmith's table or held in a black tactical glove (right hand, trigger finger extended). Side-lit with dramatic hard light from the left, casting shadows through the barrel's heat vents and accentuating the receiver's angular geometry. Focus on the muzzle end transitioning through the receiver to the integrated optic — show the tiny crimson laser lens and recessed amber LEDs. Emphasize material contrast between textured black polymer and brushed gunmetal steel. Background is deep charcoal with subtle circuit pattern texture. Cinematic neo-noir lighting with slight blue-green color cast on the highlights. Close enough to see wear marks and minor scratches on the grip. Ultra-detailed, product catalog photography style, no background clutter. --ar 3:2 --v 6
