Forge-Smith Collective Obsidian Composite Macuahuitl 'Black Teeth'
A reconstruction of the Aztec macuahuitl — a flat wooden club edged with obsidian blades — rebuilt using synthetic obsidian-composite inserts set into a carbon-lattice frame. The Black Teeth's cutting edges are sharper than surgical steel, capable of edge retention that natural obsidian cannot achieve, and mounted in a frame that will not shatter under impact as traditional wooden versions did. The weapon combines pre-Columbian design philosophy with 23rd-century materials science.

Each obsidian-composite insert is 8 centimeters long and 2 millimeters thick, set into machined slots along both edges of the paddle-shaped frame. The inserts are designed to be sacrificial — they chip and break on hard impacts, but each broken insert exposes a fresh cutting surface, and the weapon carries enough inserts (24 per edge) that it remains effective through extended combat. Replacement insert strips cost Φ40 and snap into the frame without tools.

The Forge-Smith Collective began producing Black Teeth at the request of a martial arts instructor with Nahua heritage who wanted to demonstrate that indigenous weapon designs had genuine tactical merit beyond historical curiosity. The weapon's performance in controlled testing — it outcut several corporate vibro-blades in unassisted cutting trials — silenced skeptics and created demand that the Collective struggles to meet. The macuahuitl has returned to GLMZ not as a museum piece but as a functional combat weapon.

tactical useThe Black Teeth cuts with extraordinary sharpness on the initial strike and maintains cutting performance as inserts break and expose fresh edges. The paddle shape allows both edge strikes and flat-face impacts, giving the wielder cutting and bludgeoning options in a single weapon. Against armored targets, the obsidian-composite inserts are hard enough to score and abrade armor coatings, degrading protection over repeated strikes. The weapon's flat profile makes it awkward to parry with conventional weapons — blades tend to slide along the paddle face rather than catching in a bind.
cultural contextThe return of the macuahuitl to active combat use has resonated powerfully in GLMZ's mixed-heritage communities. The weapon represents indigenous ingenuity validated by modern science — proof that pre-colonial weapon design was sophisticated, effective, and worthy of revival. The Black Teeth has sparked interest in other traditional weapons from cultures that were historically marginalized, and the Forge-Smith Collective has begun producing composite versions of weapons from African, Pacific Islander, and South Asian traditions. The movement is called 'ancestral tech' and it is growing.

story hooks
  • An ancestral-tech practitioner armed with a Black Teeth defeated a cybernetically augmented opponent in a documented public fight — the footage has become a rallying point for the unaugmented community and a source of embarrassment for the cyberware industry.
  • A corporate anthropologist has documented the ancestral-tech movement and published a paper claiming it is a 'threat to technological progress.' The paper has generated death threats from both supporters and opponents of the movement.

physical description
visual profileA flat, paddle-shaped club with an austere, almost ceremonial silhouette—wide and imposing despite its single-handed grip. The obsidian-composite edges glint with a distinctive black-mirror finish along both long sides, creating a sinister 'teeth' appearance. The overall form echoes pre-Columbian weaponry but rendered in modern composites, bridging ancient and contemporary aesthetics.
dimensionsTotal length: 75 cm (paddle body ~55 cm, grip ~20 cm). Blade width: 10 cm across the striking face.
weight descriptionBalanced and deceptively light at 1.1 kg—sits comfortably in the palm but feels substantial during a swing. No head-heavy drag; the carbon-lattice frame distributes weight evenly.
primary materialCarbon-lattice composite frame with synthetic obsidian-composite edge inserts
finishMatte carbon-black frame with a polished, volcanic-glass obsidian finish on the edge inserts. Frame shows subtle woven texture from the lattice structure. Inserts gleam with a wet, reflective black mirror that shifts to deep purple under side-light.
color schemeDeep matte charcoal-black frame with jet-black obsidian inserts that catch light like oil on water. Minimal contrast—a unified dark aesthetic broken only by the glinting edges.
grip textureWrapped in dark gray synthetic cordage (neo-suede) that provides grip purchase without bulk. Slightly tacky, designed to hold even in bloodstained or wet conditions.
distinctive features
  • Obsidian-composite inserts arranged in two parallel rows along both long edges—48 total across weapon
  • Each insert positioned flush in machined slots, creating a sawtooth silhouette in profile
  • Micro-fracture patterns visible on well-used inserts—evidence of sacrificial edge design
  • Frame edges beveled slightly to guide the eye toward the obsidian teeth
  • No unnecessary ornamentation; design is utilitarian and geometric
  • Subtle wear on high-contact grip area suggesting field use
  • Frame surface shows faint grain from carbon-lattice weave under oblique lighting
manufacturer markingsForge-Smith Collective logo—a stylized hammer overlapping a obsidian flake—stamped in small white text on the grip near the base. Serial number etched into the frame in numeric code. No branding on the blade edges.
condition typicalWell-maintained artisan work—clean and sharp, though field-used examples show chipped inserts revealing fresh edges beneath. No rust or degradation; cosmetic wear on grip from use. Owners typically maintain these as functional tools rather than display pieces.

Dramatic side-lighting emphasizing the volcanic-glass obsidian insert edges with blue-tinted highlights and deep shadow valleys between the 'teeth'. The carbon-lattice frame rendered in matte charcoal black with subtle woven texture visible. Gloved hand (tactile synthetic material, dark gray) grasping the cordage-wrapped grip, fingers positioned for mid-swing. Neo-noir urban aesthetic: sharp geometric inserts, cold polished surfaces, utilitarian design merging ancient form with 23rd-century materials. Cinematic lighting showing micro-fractures on battle-worn inserts catching light. Close-up detail of the obsidian surface showing wet, reflective black-mirror finish. --ar 3:2 --v 6
