Street Custom 'Loudmouth' Slam-Fire Shotgun
A two-piece slam-fire shotgun consisting of a barrel pipe and a receiver pipe — the barrel slides into the receiver, and slamming the barrel backward drives the shell onto a fixed firing pin, discharging the round. The Loudmouth fires 12-gauge shotshells without any trigger, safety, or mechanical complexity — the firing mechanism is the operator's arm slamming two pipes together. Reload is performed by sliding the barrel forward, extracting the spent shell, inserting a new one, and slamming again.

The Loudmouth is the most powerful weapon that can be built with zero skill and near-zero materials. Two pipes of the right diameter, a bolt for a firing pin, and an endcap welded or threaded onto the receiver pipe. Total cost: Φ8. Total engineering: none. The weapon fires full-power 12-gauge ammunition — buckshot, slug, whatever the operator can acquire — with all the authority that implies. At 5 meters, a 12-gauge buckshot round from a Loudmouth is identical in lethality to a round from a Φ3,000 combat shotgun.

The weapon's slam-fire mechanism means there is no trigger discipline — the round fires when the operator pushes the barrel home, and the timing of that push is affected by adrenaline, fear, and the chaos of whatever situation requires a pipe shotgun. Accidental discharges are common. The weapon has no safety because there is nothing to put a safety on. It is a pipe that converts forward motion into a dead person.

specificationscaliber: 12 gauge
capacity: 1 round
effective range: 5-15 meters
barrel length: 300-500mm
weight: 1-2 kg
reload: Slide forward, extract, insert, slam
firing mechanism: Inertial (slam-fire)
tactical useClose-range maximum-impact engagement. The Loudmouth delivers 12-gauge firepower in the crudest possible package. Used when the operator needs the most destructive commonly available ammunition and has no access to manufactured weapons.
cultural contextThe Loudmouth is the Shelf's great equalizer at its most extreme — a weapon that puts 12-gauge authority in the hands of anyone with Φ8 and access to a hardware store. The weapon's name is both descriptive (it is extremely loud) and metaphorical (it speaks for people who have no other voice). Slam-fire shotguns have been used in every major Shelf uprising in living memory.
known users
  • Shelf residents (widespread)
  • Impromptu resistance groups
  • Home defenders
  • Anyone facing a threat that requires more than a .22
story hooks
  • A Loudmouth was used in what is being called the Shelf's first successful bank robbery — a teenager with a Φ8 pipe shotgun walked into a corporate financial branch and walked out with Φ25,000. The security systems were designed to detect manufactured weapons. They didn't flag two pieces of pipe.
  • Loudmouth shotguns have been found with rifled inserts — short sections of properly rifled barrel pressed into the pipe bore that allow the weapon to fire slugs with actual accuracy out to 30 meters. Someone is upgrading the Shelf's arsenal with Φ2 worth of precision engineering.

physical description
visual profileTwo brutal steel pipes welded into a crude shotgun — a thick receiver pipe with a sliding barrel pipe that telescopes backward. No stock, no furniture, no pretense. Pure industrial violence. The firing pin is a simple bolt protruding from the receiver's rear. It looks like something assembled in a garage in 20 minutes.
dimensionsReceiver pipe: 250mm length × 35mm diameter. Barrel pipe: 350–450mm length × 33mm diameter (slides inside receiver). Total extended length: 550–700mm. Compact when compressed, unwieldy when ready to fire.
weight descriptionHeavy and unbalanced — 1.2–1.8 kg of solid steel with all the mass concentrated in the barrel and receiver. Feels like swinging a sledgehammer; recoil-heavy and tiring to hold steady. The forward weight of the barrel dominates.
primary materialSchedule 40 steel pipe (receiver and barrel). Welded endcap or threaded cap on receiver. Simple steel bolt for firing pin. Raw industrial stock — no machining, no refinement.
finishBare steel with heavy mill scale and rust bloom. Oil-stained from handling. Scorch marks and burn discoloration around the muzzle from repeated firings. Scratches and dings from being carried and slammed. Some examples show crude hammer marks where the endcap was installed.
color schemeDark gunmetal gray with rust-orange creeping up from wear points. Blackened muzzle from powder. Oil-dark receiver.
grip textureBare steel pipe — cold, slightly oily, uncomfortable. Some users wrap rags or electrical tape around the receiver for grip. Others don't bother. The barrel has no grip — it's purely meant to be slammed, not held.
distinctive features
  • Protruding bolt head (firing pin) at receiver rear — crude and obvious
  • Perfectly circular bore visible at muzzle — unrifled, crude
  • Welded or threaded seam where endcap meets receiver — often rough, sometimes leaking gas
  • Slide marks on barrel pipe from repeated insertion/extraction — shiny wear stripes
  • Scorch and carbon buildup around the muzzle crown
  • Ventilation ports or stress cracks around the firing pin bolt — signs of repeated pressure cycling
  • No sights, no furniture, no additions — pure pipe
manufacturer markingsNone. Street Custom doesn't stamp serials — these are anonymous assembly line weapons made in ungoverned workshops. Some have crude owner marks: names scratched into the barrel, gang symbols, or tally marks (kill counts).
condition typicalBattle-worn and neglected. Rust progression is normal. Cracks around the breach are common in heavily-used examples. Powder residue and fouling buildup inside. The weapon is designed for brutal use and disposal — most are discarded after a handful of rounds anyway.
