Meridian Munitions Coach-12 'Stagecoach'
The Meridian Munitions Coach-12 is a break-action side-by-side shotgun chambered in 12 gauge, featuring two 18-inch barrels, exposed hammers, and a wooden stock that would not have been out of place two centuries ago. The weapon holds exactly two rounds, fires them as fast as the shooter can pull the dual triggers, and reloads by breaking the action open and dropping in fresh shells.

The Stagecoach is an anachronism that refuses to die. It is mechanically the simplest possible shotgun — no magazine tube, no gas system, no pump mechanism. Two barrels, two hammers, two triggers. The break action means the weapon can be loaded, stored, and verified at a glance. Nothing can go wrong mechanically that a hinge pin replacement won't fix. This radical simplicity keeps the Stagecoach in production despite being technically obsolete by two centuries.

Meridian Munitions sells the Coach-12 for less than most pump-action shotguns, and it finds buyers among residents who value simplicity above all else. Elderly Shelf residents, rural settlers, and individuals with physical limitations that make pump-action or semi-automatic operation difficult all gravitate toward the Stagecoach. Two rounds of 12-gauge buckshot at close range remains devastatingly effective, and the weapon's limitations are irrelevant if the encounter ends in two shots.

specificationscaliber: 12 gauge

rate_of_fire: Two shots (break-action reload)
magazine_capacity: 2 rounds
weight: 2.6 kg
tactical useA minimal-capacity close-range shotgun offering extreme simplicity at the cost of capacity and reload speed. Both barrels can be fired in rapid succession for a devastating two-shot volley. Reloading requires opening the break action and inserting fresh shells individually. Not suitable for any engagement requiring more than two shots. Best deployed as an ambush or first-contact defensive weapon.
cultural contextThe Stagecoach is beloved by people who distrust complexity. In Shelf culture, it occupies a position of folksy respect — the weapon your grandparent kept by the door, and their grandparent before them. The break-action shotgun is so culturally embedded that it transcends the firearms debate entirely; even anti-weapons advocates struggle to argue against something so plainly defensive and limited.

story hooks
  • A Stagecoach loaded with two rounds of slug is the only weapon available when a group of people need to hold a door against multiple attackers. The math is terrible, but the courage isn't.
  • An antique Stagecoach is discovered with custom-loaded shells sealed in the chamber for decades. Whatever is in those shells, it isn't standard ammunition.

physical description
visual profileA deliberately retro side-by-side shotgun with an aggressive, compact stance. Twin barrels dominate the profile, flared slightly at the muzzles. Exposed hammer spurs rise above the receiver like predatory ears. The wooden furniture evokes 19th-century craftsmanship, yet the precise metalwork and tight tolerances scream modern manufacturing. A weapon that looks both timeless and deliberately defiant against trend.
dimensionsOverall length: 112 cm | Barrel length: 46 cm | Width across barrels at muzzle: 4.2 cm | Stock length of pull: 36 cm
weight descriptionHefty but well-balanced. The 2.6 kg distributes naturally between the barrels and stock, encouraging shouldering. Not light, but purposeful—every gram serves function.
primary materialBlued steel receiver and barrels; walnut or walnut-grain composite stock and fore-end. Steel trigger assembly with hardened sear components.
finishDeep matte blue on all steel surfaces—not glossy, but rich and absorptive. The wood finish is satin, revealing natural grain without artifice. Minimal cosmetic polish; emphasis on durability over shine.
color schemeGunmetal blue-black as primary | Natural walnut brown as secondary | Brushed steel on trigger guards and hammer spurs as accent
grip textureWalnut stock with traditional checkering pattern cut into pistol grip and fore-end—fine crosshatch texture for secure purchase even with gloved hands. Slightly raised comb. Warm wood feel contrasts with cool steel trigger assembly.
distinctive features
  • Dual exposed hammer spurs with pronounced knurling for thumb-cocking
  • Break-action hinge pin visible on right side of receiver
  • Twin trigger assembly: front trigger fires right barrel, rear trigger fires left barrel
  • Simple bead front sight on top rib
  • Ventilated rib between barrels
  • Ejector pods on breech face—bright metal showing when action opens
  • Minimal safety lever (if present) integrated into trigger guard
  • No rails, no optics mounts, no accessory points
  • Faint manufacturing witness marks on barrel flats
manufacturer markingsMERIDIAN MUNITIONS stamped in serif font on top rib between barrels. Serial number etched on left side of receiver. COACH-12 marked on barrel flat. '12 GA' stamped on breech face. Simple blocky logo—no elaborate branding.
condition typicalField units show honest wear: scuffed wood from sling swivels or holster contact, light patina on steel surfaces (not rust, but honest oxidation), possible handling marks on receiver. Mechanically pristine—these weapons are maintained religiously by owners who understand simplicity equals reliability. Never tacticool, never cosmetically modified. Functional beauty.

Dual 18-inch barrels parallel to viewer, twin exposed hammers catching dramatic side-lighting from upper left. Walnut wood grain visible with deep matte blue steel finish showing micro-texture. Gloved hand (tactical black leather, some augment scarring on wrist) steadying the stock, thumb near hammer spur. Cold white LED product lights from above creating hard shadows beneath receiver. Neo-noir urban aesthetic: matte black platform surface with faint holographic serial number display floating nearby. Minimal background—industrial concrete texture, slight chromatic aberration. Timeless weapon with zero chrome, zero neon. Pure form, pure function. --ar 3:2 --v 6
