TESSERA VS-2 'Smokescreen'
A vehicle-integrated smoke and countermeasure dispensing system that deploys obscurant smoke, oil slick, caltrops, and chaff from concealed ports in a vehicle's rear bumper, side panels, and undercarriage. The VS-2 provides a comprehensive suite of pursuit denial capabilities, allowing a fleeing vehicle to create multiple obstacles for pursuing vehicles and disable both visual and electronic tracking.

TESSERA designed the VS-2 as a defensive counterpart to offensive vehicle weapon systems like the VMG-4. Where the Turret fights, the Smokescreen runs — deploying countermeasures that blind pursuers, puncture tires, destroy traction, and confuse radar and infrared tracking. A full VS-2 deployment creates a 50-meter zone of obscurant smoke behind the vehicle, scattered with caltrops that defeat standard tires and slick with an oil compound that reduces road friction to near zero.

The system's electronic countermeasures are equally aggressive. The chaff dispensers scatter radar-reflective filaments that create ghost returns on pursuit vehicle sensors, and an integrated infrared flare system defeats thermal tracking. The VS-2 turns escape into an engineering problem and solves it with brute-force denial of every sensor and surface the pursuit relies on.

base technologies
  • Multi-spectrum obscurant smoke
  • Deployable caltrop dispersal
  • Radar and infrared countermeasures
specificationssmoke coverage: 50-meter obscurant zone
caltrop dispersal: 200 units per deployment
oil slick: 30-meter coverage area
chaff range: 100-meter radar confusion zone
IR flares: 8 per reload
deployment: Dashboard-controlled, individual or full-suite
reload: Requires depot service
tactical usePursuit denial and escape facilitation. Operators deploy countermeasures sequentially or simultaneously based on pursuit type — smoke for visual, caltrops for wheeled, oil for traction, chaff for radar, flares for infrared. A full-suite deployment virtually guarantees escape from any single-vehicle pursuit.
cultural contextThe VS-2 is the preferred defensive system for GLMZ's extraction specialists and high-value couriers — people whose job requires them to run rather than fight. 'Smoking out' is slang for deploying countermeasures during a chase, and VS-2-equipped vehicles are identified by subtle reinforcement of the rear bumper that experienced operators learn to spot.

  • Corporate extraction teams
  • High-value courier services
  • VIP transport operators
  • Criminal organizations with vehicle fleets
story hooks
  • A VS-2 smoke deployment on a highway caused a 30-vehicle pileup that killed seven people. The vehicle deploying countermeasures was fleeing a corporate security team, and neither party will accept responsibility for the civilian casualties caught between them.
  • A VS-2 system has been modified to dispense an aerosolized nerve agent instead of obscurant smoke. The vehicle's rear bumper is now a chemical weapon delivery system disguised as a standard countermeasure package.

physical description
visual profileA networked array of concealed dispensing modules integrated into vehicle architecture—invisible until deployment. The system manifests as discrete port clusters hidden within bumper recesses, side-panel trim lines, and undercarriage housings. When active, multiple simultaneous ejection points create a choreographed defense cloud.
dimensionsModular installation across vehicle rear section: primary smoke dispensers 15cm diameter × 8cm depth per unit; caltrop magazines 20cm × 12cm × 10cm; IR flare banks 12cm × 6cm × 8cm. Total integrated footprint spans 180cm rear bumper length, 90cm side panel width, undercarriage depth varies by vehicle platform.
weight descriptionSystem weight distributed across vehicle frame—individual modules weigh 2-4kg each, but the full deployment apparatus (with loaded ordnance) adds 40-60kg to vehicle rear end, noticeable in handling dynamics. Feels substantial but engineered for minimal center-of-gravity shift.
primary materialAnodized aluminum chassis for dispensing housings; reinforced thermoplastic polymer for port covers; stainless steel ejection mechanisms; ceramic-composite nozzles for high-temperature smoke discharge. Internal magazines use impact-resistant polycarbonate.
finishMatte gunmetal gray with satin black accent panels. Port covers feature integrated vehicle bodywork finish—seamless integration designed for invisibility. Internal mechanisms show industrial polish with light surface oxidation from thermal cycling. Ejection nozzles carbon-scored from repeated deployment.
color schemeChassis: gunmetal gray. Port surrounds: body-matched (varies by vehicle). Exposed mechanisms: burnt copper and carbon black. Status indicator rings: amber (standby), red (armed), blue (active deployment).
grip textureN/A—vehicle-integrated system. Dashboard interface uses tactile feedback buttons with rubberized caps and recessed membrane controls. Reload ports feature knurled connectors for depot service coupling.
distinctive features
  • Dual-axis smoke ejection ports with swivel nozzles for directional deployment
  • Caltrop dispersion chutes with mechanical randomization drums—visible as etched spiral patterns on internal surfaces
  • Chaff cartridge modules with visible copper-filament spools behind translucent polymer magazine windows
  • IR flare clusters mounted in fan array configuration
  • Thermal venting ports designed to resemble factory exhaust components
  • Electronic firing relay boxes wrapped in mylar heat-shielding
  • Color-coded ordnance magazines: white (smoke), red (caltrops), blue (oil), yellow (chaff), green (IR)
  • Pressure gauge indicators on each magazine cluster
  • Integration seams virtually invisible—ports blend into bumper creases and trim lines
manufacturer markingsTESSERA corporate logo embossed on hidden service panel behind left side-panel trim (visible only during maintenance). Serial number and compliance plate mounted on primary control module: TESSERA VS-2 | SMOKESCREEN | SN: [alphanumeric] | RESTRICTED ORDINANCE. Legality stamp: GLMZ-RESTRICTED 2226.
condition typicalFactory-fresh units appear completely integrated—zero visible weaponry. Field-worn systems show scorch marks around smoke ejection ports, minor denting on caltrop magazine housings from road debris, heat discoloration around IR flare banks (orange-brown patina). Heavy-use vehicles display carbon buildup on nozzles, scratched magazine covers from repeated reload cycles, slight warping on thermoplastic port covers from cumulative thermal stress.
