Crucible designed the CF-15 for breaching operations where explosive charges are impractical or insufficient. The continuous beam can cut a human-sized opening in a reinforced concrete wall in under 8 seconds, and its thermal effect on personnel caught in the beam path is instantaneous and catastrophic. The weapon requires vehicle-grade power supply and cooling systems, making it unsuitable for dismounted operation.

The Meltdown has earned its nickname from several incidents where the weapon's beam was sustained longer than intended, heating structural elements to the point of failure.
