VoltLine SpineBurst SB-7 'Hedgehog'
A vest with retractable polymer spines embedded in the outer surface of the back and shoulders — the areas most commonly targeted in rear-approach assaults. When the wearer activates the system via a squeeze switch in either hand, twenty-four spines extend 3 centimeters from the vest surface. The spines are blunt-tipped polymer rods coated with a contact irritant — they do not puncture skin but deliver a sharp poking pain combined with a chemical burn sensation that makes grabbing or holding the wearer intensely unpleasant.

VoltLine designed the SB-7 to address the most common assault vector in GLMZ: the rear approach. Analysis of security footage from thousands of street assaults showed that the majority begin with a grab from behind — shoulder, collar, hood, or backpack strap. The SB-7 makes all of these grab points hazardous. The spines retract automatically when the squeeze switch is released, allowing the wearer to sit, lean against walls, and interact normally when the system is not active.

The vest is worn under an outer layer and is invisible when the spines are retracted. When extended, the spines are visible through thin outer garments but not through jackets or coats. The contact irritant coating lasts approximately ninety days before requiring reapplication — VoltLine sells recoating kits for Φ25. The vest itself costs Φ310 and is available in sizes that accommodate a range of body types.

base technologies
  • Retractable polymer spine mechanism
  • Contact irritant coating
  • Squeeze-activated deployment
specificationsspine count: 24
spine length: 3 cm extended
spine tip: blunt polymer with contact irritant coating
irritant duration: burning sensation for 10-15 minutes
irritant recoating interval: 90 days
activation: squeeze switch (either hand)
weight: 280 g
cost: Φ310 (vest), Φ25 (recoating kit)
spine retraction: automatic on switch release
tactical useActivate the spines when you sense a threat approaching from behind. The spines make it painful to grab, hold, or restrain the wearer from behind. If grabbed before activation, the sudden extension of spines into the attacker's grip is startling enough to cause involuntary release. After the attacker releases, the irritant coating continues to cause pain for ten to fifteen minutes, discouraging re-engagement. Turn to face the attacker after the initial grab is broken to deny further rear access.
cultural contextThe SB-7 has contributed to a growing culture of 'defensive dressing' in GLMZ — choosing clothing based on its protective capabilities rather than purely its appearance. The vest is popular among people who work in exposed environments: street vendors, transit maintenance workers, and anyone who regularly has their back to public space. The visible spine extension has also been adopted as an intimidation display by some wearers, activating the spines preemptively to signal 'don't try it.'
story hooks
  • The contact irritant used on SB-7 spines has been found to cause permanent skin discoloration in individuals with certain genetic profiles — VoltLine claims the correlation is not causation, but affected communities disagree.
  • A street-level modification replaces the SB-7's blunt polymer spines with sharpened metal ones — turning a defensive deterrent into a concealed weapon that causes serious puncture wounds.

physical description
visual profileA fitted tactical vest with a sleek, minimalist silhouette when inert. The back and shoulder panels have a subtly ribbed texture hinting at the retractable spine mechanism beneath. When activated, it transforms into a defensive porcupine—24 blunt polymer spines bristling outward at 3cm intervals across the upper back and shoulder blades, creating an aggressive defensive posture.
dimensionsVest body: 58cm length (shoulder to waist), 42cm width (armpit to armpit). Extended spines project 3cm from surface. Available in XS to 3XL sizing.
weight descriptionSurprisingly light and balanced—280g total weight distributed evenly across the torso. Sits close to the body with minimal bulk, allowing natural movement when spines are retracted.
primary materialCore vest: reinforced polymer composite base layer with integrated mechanical spine channels. Spines: rigid polymer rods with injection-molded joints. Activation mechanism: lightweight alloy framework with synthetic squeeze switches.
finishMatte charcoal polymer body with satin-finish spine rods. Contact irritant coating appears as a slight chemical sheen on the spine tips—barely visible but present under close inspection.
color schemeGunmetal gray primary with matte black accent panels around the spine deployment zones. Spine tips have a faint amber tint from the contact irritant coating.
grip textureSqueeze switches embedded in vest side panels feature rubberized, textured grip zones for reliable activation with gloved or wet hands. Vest panels themselves are smooth-finished for comfort against clothing.
distinctive features
  • 24 evenly-spaced retractable polymer spines across back and shoulders
  • Dual squeeze switches (left and right sides) for ambidextrous activation
  • Visible spine guide channels running vertically down the back when spines retracted
  • Amber-tinted irritant coating visible on spine tips under direct light
  • Subtle VOLTLINE brand embossing on left shoulder panel
  • Mechanical snap points where spines lock fully extended
  • Heat-dissipation vents between spine channels for extended wear comfort
manufacturer markingsVOLTLINE PERSONAL ELECTRONICS logo stamped on left shoulder in raised relief. Serial number plate mounted on interior center panel with manufacturing date. Care instructions and irritant recoating schedule printed on interior back panel in eight languages.
condition typicalGenerally clean and well-maintained in working-class use (Tier 2-3). Spine rods show minor scuff marks from deployment cycles. Contact irritant coating gradually dulls to a pale yellow-brown over the 90-day recoating interval. Frequent users may show wear patterns on squeeze switches from repeated activation.

Dramatic side-lighting from the left casts sharp shadows between the polymer spine rods, highlighting their 3cm projection. The charcoal polymer vest body appears matte and sleek, while the amber-tinted spine tips catch light with a chemical sheen. Gloved hands visible on the mannequin holding the squeeze switches, fingers relaxed. Background is a dark neo-noir urban setting—concrete wall or industrial surface slightly out of focus. Tight crop focusing on the spine deployment area. Include subtle VOLTLINE branding on the shoulder. Cinematic, high-contrast lighting emphasizing the defensive, porcupine-like aesthetic.
