Hearthstone Firearms Single-20 'Farmhand'
The Hearthstone Single-20 is a single-shot break-action shotgun chambered in 20 gauge with a 26-inch barrel and an exposed hammer. The weapon holds one round, fires it, breaks open to eject the spent shell, and accepts a new round. It is the absolute minimum viable shotgun — simpler even than the Stagecoach, with one barrel instead of two and a correspondingly lower price.

The Farmhand is the first gun many Shelf families own. Its single-shot capacity is a limitation that Hearthstone reframes as a safety feature — you cannot fire more rounds than you intend to, and the break-action gives a clear visual indication of whether the weapon is loaded. For families with children, the simplicity and visual safety of the Farmhand provide comfort that more capable but more complex weapons cannot.

The 20-gauge chambering reduces recoil to a level manageable by smaller-framed adults and older teenagers, making the Farmhand the de facto training shotgun for families who can't afford separate training and defensive weapons. Children learn to shoot on it, parents keep it loaded by the door at night, and when it finally wears out, they buy another one for less than the cost of a week's protein rations.

weight: 2.2 kg
tactical useA single-shot shotgun with zero tactical flexibility. One round of 20-gauge buckshot at close range is lethal but offers no follow-up capability. The weapon's only tactical value is its simplicity — nothing can mechanically fail, and the shooter doesn't need to remember any operating procedure beyond 'break, load, close, fire.' Suitable only as a last-resort defensive weapon.
cultural contextThe Farmhand is childhood for many Shelf residents. Learning to crack open the action, drop in a shell, and snap it closed is a rite of passage that transcends the weapon's humble capabilities. In Shelf culture, the Farmhand is not judged by what it can do — it is judged by who it has protected.

story hooks
  • A teenager with a Farmhand holds off a group of armed intruders by bluffing with the single shot — cracking the action loudly between hiding spots to make them think multiple shooters are present.
  • A Shelf community discovers that Hearthstone has been using recycled steel from a contaminated source for Farmhand barrels. The contamination causes barrel failure after as few as fifty shots.

physical description
visual profileA utilitarian, almost agricultural shotgun—all business with no flash. The break-action design creates a distinctive hinged silhouette that opens like a trapdoor. Compact and purposeful, with the exposed hammer dominating the rear profile. Looks like something a rural family would hang above a door without thought.
dimensionsOverall length: 112 cm. Barrel length: 66 cm. Stock depth: 35 cm. Receiver width: 4.5 cm.
weight descriptionLight and manageable—2.2 kg makes it easy for a teenager or smaller-framed adult to shoulder and hold steady. No unnecessary mass. Feels balanced at the receiver.
primary materialBlued steel receiver and barrel. Walnut or polymer hardwood furniture depending on market tier. Hammer and trigger group are milled steel.
finishTraditional matte blue-black on barrel and receiver. Exposed metal shows honest wear—not polished, not coated with chrome. Working-gun patina. Wood furniture is satin or oil-finished, deliberately understated.
color schemeMatte blue-black barrel and action, warm tan to dark walnut stock. No accent colors. No anodizing. Brass bead sight at muzzle—the only bright element.
grip textureWalnut or hardened polymer stock with light checkering for traction. Smooth, worn grain. Hammer spur has shallow knurling for thumb access. Nothing fancy—grip is honest and textureless.
distinctive features
  • Exposed external hammer—visible safety indicator when cocked
  • Break-action hinge with clean mechanical separation
  • Simple brass bead front sight (no rear sight)
  • Spent shell ejector on the underside of the barrel lug
  • Minimal trigger guard—functional, not protective
  • Open receiver design—easy to visually confirm load status
  • Single trigger blade with no safety lever
  • Flat-topped comb suitable for slugs or buckshot
manufacturer markings"HEARTHSTONE FIREARMS" stamped in serif font on the left barrel flat. Gauge marking (20 GA) on the barrel underside. Serial number on the receiver underside, shallow-etched. No logo—just text. Deliberately forgettable.
condition typicalWell-maintained but showing honest use. Barrel may have minor dings. Stock shows handling wear but remains solid. Metal is patina'd but not rusted. Often kept loaded and accessible—the hammer is frequently in the cocked position from repeated use.
image promptProduct photograph of a Hearthstone Single-20 'Farmhand' shotgun positioned on a dark weathered wood surface, break-action open to show the empty chamber. Dramatic side-lighting from upper left reveals the blued steel barrel's patina and the walnut stock's grain texture. A gloved hand (worn leather work glove, right side of frame) rests on the stock. Close detail of the brass bead sight and exposed hammer. Neo-noir urban aesthetic: cool tungsten side-light casting sharp shadows across the receiver, subtle bokeh of an out-of-focus rural setting in background (weathered fence, dawn light). Color grade: cool blue-gray tones, desaturated browns. Mounted on a tarped Iowan Behemoth shipping crate partially visible. This is a family's first gun—humble, honest, indestructible. --ar 3:2 --v 6
