NovaTread CaltroDisk CD-1 'Scatterfoot'
A palm-sized disc that, when thrown on the ground, breaks apart into eighteen spring-loaded micro-caltrops that scatter across approximately four square meters of surface. Each micro-caltrop is a 2-centimeter tetrahedral spike made of hardened polymer — sharp enough to puncture standard footwear soles and embed in the foot, but designed to break off at the base rather than cause deep penetration wounds. The intent is to make pursuit painful and slow rather than to cause serious injury.

NovaTread developed the CD-1 specifically for the 'run and scatter' self-defense scenario — the user throws the disc behind them while fleeing, forcing the pursuer to either stop, navigate around the caltrop field, or step through it and suffer multiple foot punctures. The caltrops are bright orange, making them visible enough that a cautious pursuer will slow down to avoid them, while a reckless pursuer will hit several at full speed.

The CD-1 is sold in packs of two for Φ40. NovaTread includes a small collection magnet in each pack for retrieval of deployed caltrops — the polymer construction means they are not ferromagnetic, but each caltrop contains a small iron bead for magnetic cleanup. GLMZ municipal codes require deployed caltrops to be collected within one hour to avoid hazard to pedestrians, a regulation that is effectively unenforceable given the circumstances under which they are typically deployed.

base technologies
  • Spring-loaded caltrop dispersal mechanism
  • Breakaway-tip polymer spike design
  • Magnetic recovery bead embedding
specificationscaltrops per disc: 18
scatter radius: ~4 square meters
caltrop size: 2 cm tetrahedral
caltrop material: hardened polymer with iron recovery bead
penetration depth: 4-8 mm (limited by breakaway tip)
weight: 55 g per disc
disc diameter: 6 cm
cost: Φ40 per 2-pack
color: bright orange (high visibility)
recovery: included magnetic collection tool
tactical useWhile running from a pursuer, throw the CD-1 disc hard at the ground behind you. The impact breaks the disc housing and the spring mechanism scatters the caltrops in a fan pattern. Do not throw backwards over your shoulder — throw down and behind at a 45-degree angle for optimal scatter. The bright orange color is intentional: a visible hazard that causes a pursuer to hesitate is as valuable as an invisible one they step on. Do not use in areas where barefoot pedestrians are common.
cultural contextThe CD-1 has become the signature tool of GLMZ's runner culture — not recreational runners, but the delivery couriers, message carriers, and independent operators whose job is to move quickly through hostile territory. The orange caltrop scatter has become a visual shorthand in street art and graffiti for escape and freedom. NovaTread sponsors community 'scatter drills' in Tier 1-2 neighborhoods, teaching residents escape techniques that combine caltrops, smoke, and flash devices for maximum survival probability.
story hooks
  • A modified CD-1 has appeared with caltrops that carry a contact irritant — the spikes not only puncture but deliver a chemical payload that causes the wound to burn intensely, making it impossible to continue running even after removing the caltrop.
  • A Tier 1 neighborhood has started deploying CD-1 caltrops permanently across certain alleyways as improvised perimeter defense — the orange field has become a boundary marker that local residents navigate around but outsiders stumble into.

physical description
visual profileA compact, disc-shaped self-defense dispersal device with a bright orange polymer shell. At first glance, it resembles a thick hockey puck or small frisbee—innocuous enough to fit in a jacket pocket, but engineered with deliberate simplicity. The disc has a slightly domed top surface with subtle ribbing for grip, and a flat base designed for impact deployment.
dimensions6 cm diameter, 1.2 cm thickness. Each individual caltrop measures 2 cm in height from base to apex.
weight descriptionSurprisingly dense for its size—55 grams creates a satisfying heft in the palm without being cumbersome. Balanced enough to throw accurately, but substantial enough to generate the impact force needed for internal spring mechanism activation.
primary materialHigh-impact polymer shell housing the spring dispersal mechanism; internal caltrops are hardened polymer composite with embedded iron recovery beads.
finishMatte orange exterior with subtle grip-texture ribbing on the top hemisphere. The base features a recessed impact zone with a slightly darker shade of orange, indicating the stress-point designed to fracture upon hard contact with ground.
color schemeBright safety orange as primary color (visibility-critical for self-defense application). Subtle darker orange shading on the impact base and around the rim edge for visual depth and durability indication.
grip textureRadiating circular grip ridges on the top surface provide purchase without being aggressive—designed for quick palm deployment rather than extended carry grip. The edges are beveled and smooth to prevent snagging on pocket fabric.
distinctive features
  • Radial grip ridges optimized for throwing mechanics
  • Recessed impact zone on base—darker orange coloring indicates fracture point
  • Subtle seam line around the equator where upper and lower polymer hemispheres meet
  • Barely-visible micro-dimpling across the surface for aerodynamic stability in flight
  • Small embossed manufacturer stamp on top dome (NOVATREAD tactical logo)
  • High-visibility orange maintains its intensity even under low-light conditions, critical for self-defense scenarios
manufacturer markingsNOVATREAD TACTICAL CONSUMER logo (stylized 'NT' with forward motion chevron) embossed on the top dome, approximately 1.5 cm wide. Small text notation 'CD-1 SCATTERFOOT' visible near the equatorial seam. Tiny batch/date code stamped on the base in white ink.
condition typicalSold in pristine condition within protective cardboard sleeves (packs of two). In field use, deployed discs are recovered via included magnetic collection tool, meaning intact devices remain clean and operational. Unused discs show no weathering; post-deployment examples would be missing their internal spring mechanism and caltrops by definition.
image promptProduct photography of NovaTread CaltroDisk CD-1 'Scatterfoot' self-defense disc. Bright safety orange polymer disc (6cm diameter, 1.2cm thick) with radial grip ridges visible on top dome. Shot from three-quarter angle on matte dark grey surface under dramatic side-lighting that emphasizes the texture and industrial form. Include a scattered arrangement of eighteen bright orange tetrahedral 2-cm polymer caltrops around the disc, each with subtle light-catching facets showing the hardened polymer construction and tiny iron recovery bead glint at the core. Include gloved tactical hand (near-black neoprene with orange accent stripe) positioning the disc for throw. Clean, neo-noir product catalog aesthetic with high contrast between the safety orange and dark background. Shallow depth of field keeps the disc in sharp focus. Include small magnetic collection tool (sleek minimalist handle, magnetic tip) partially visible in frame. Overhead rim-light creates subtle rim-glow on the disc edges. --ar 3:2 --v 6
