Street Custom 'Thumper' Improvised Launcher
A crude single-shot launcher assembled from plumbing pipe, a shotgun firing mechanism, and whatever propellant the builder could acquire. The Thumper fires improvised projectiles — typically tin cans filled with scrap metal and a detonator, or repurposed commercial firework motors with fragmentation sleeves — at ranges between 20 and 100 meters with accuracy best described as 'in that general direction.' The weapon is dangerous to the user nearly as much as the target, with a failure rate that discourages repeat engagements.

Thumpers appear throughout the Shelf whenever tensions escalate to the point where residents feel the need for area weapons. They are built in garages and basements from materials that cost less than Φ50, and their improvised munitions are assembled from similarly available components. The weapons are terrifyingly effective despite their crudeness — an explosion doesn't need to be precise to be lethal, and a can full of scrap metal detonating in a crowded space achieves the same result as military fragmentation at a fraction of the cost.

Every Thumper is unique. There are no production standards, no quality control, and no two weapons that fire the same way. Operators learn their weapon's specific quirks through practice — how far left it pulls, how much the propellant charge varies between shots, whether this particular pipe has a weak seam that might split on the fourth firing. Using a Thumper is an act of faith.

base technologies
  • Improvised launcher construction
  • Scrap fragmentation munitions
  • Repurposed propellant systems
specificationscaliber: Variable (typically 50-80mm pipe bore)
capacity: 1 round
effective range: 20-100 meters (optimistic)
weight: 2-5 kg depending on construction
reliability: Approximately 70% successful firing rate
tactical useDesperation weapon for area denial when no better options exist. Shelf residents deploy Thumpers against incursions by hostile groups, corporate clearance operations, or rival block conflicts. The weapon's primary tactical value is psychological — the sound of an improvised grenade detonation causes trained operators to take cover, buying time for the defenders.
cultural contextThe Thumper is a symbol of the Shelf's resourcefulness and desperation in equal measure. Building one is a community activity — neighbors contribute pipe, propellant, and scrap. Using one is a statement that the situation has become bad enough to risk blowing off your own hands. Thumper builders are respected in the Shelf the way gunsmiths were respected on historical frontiers.

story hooks
  • A Thumper round landed in a corporate security checkpoint and killed two guards. The improvised munition contained fragments of a specific alloy used only in one corponation's manufacturing process — the shrapnel was a message as much as a weapon.
  • Someone in the Shelf has figured out how to build Thumper rounds that deploy a chemical smoke screen instead of fragmentation — non-lethal area denial for Φ20 per shot. The recipe is spreading through the community, and corporate security is terrified of an entire district that can vanish behind smoke on command.

physical description
visual profileA brutally utilitarian contraption—essentially a length of industrial plumbing pipe welded to a crude trigger assembly salvaged from a pump-action shotgun. The overall impression is of something assembled in desperation: functional but volatile, held together by determination and whatever welding equipment was available. No smoothness, no design language, just raw purpose.
dimensionsOverall length: 65-75 cm | Pipe bore: 50-80 mm | Trigger assembly depth: 8-12 cm | Grip length: 12-15 cm
weight descriptionHefty and front-heavy. The mass concentrates in the barrel section, creating a pronounced muzzle-down bias. Feels unbalanced in hand—requires two-handed management, with the forward grip taking most of the weight. Not unwieldy in the sense of being oversized, but definitely awkward.
primary materialMild steel or galvanized plumbing pipe (barrel), welded to a repurposed shotgun breach assembly. Grip may be wrapped in cord, electrical tape, or bare metal depending on builder preference.
finishHeavily oxidized steel with visible weld seams and grinding marks. Bare metal showing surface corrosion, rust bloom in irregular patches. No protective coating—this is a weapon that exists in the weather. Some examples show heat discoloration from repeated firing. Welding joints are rough, sometimes with slag still visible.
color schemeDull gunmetal gray with rust-brown oxidation. Accent areas (trigger assembly, firing pin) often show darker heat-treat coloring from the salvaged shotgun components. Grip wrapping, if present, might be neon tape or reflective cord for handling visibility.
grip textureBare welded metal or rough electrical tape wrap. If cord-wrapped, texture is coarse and slightly sticky from age and grime. No ergonomic consideration—just something to hold onto.
distinctive features
  • Visible weld seams running the length of the barrel, some with visible stress fractures
  • Crude gas vent ports drilled or cut into the pipe sidewall (emergency pressure relief)
  • Firing pin assembly hanging exposed beneath the pipe, secured with safety wire
  • Ammunition loading aperture: no breech mechanism, rounds are loaded from the muzzle or side opening and seated with a ramrod
  • Propellant chamber marked with scratched notches indicating shot count
  • Heat discoloration rings around the muzzle from repeated detonations
  • Maker's mark: often a scratched initial or symbol gouged into the metal
  • No sights—aiming is purely instinctive or marked with a crude notch filed into the barrel
manufacturer markingsNone official. Builders usually mark ownership with scratched initials, gang tags, or tally marks indicating rounds fired. Serial numbers are nonexistent. Occasionally a maker's symbol (stylized X, personal glyph, block tag) etched into the breach assembly.
condition typicalBattle-worn and jury-rigged. Evidence of field repairs: fresh weld spatter near fracture sites, safety wire wrapped around suspected weak points, tape patches covering small splits. Every weapon shows the scars of its builder's learning curve and its operator's desperation.

Weapon rests at angle on dark tactical fabric, harsh side-lighting emphasizing weld seams, rust bloom, and metal fatigue marks. Gloved hand (tactical glove, neon trim) gripping the wrapped barrel section. Shallow depth of field isolates the crude firing mechanism and muzzle end. Atmospheric haze of workshop dust. Industrial neo-noir aesthetic, post-industrial Shelf brutalism. Raw, dangerous, utterly without polish. --ar 3:2 --v 6
