A low-impedance shot exits at subsonic velocity with minimal EM signature, functioning as a near-silent precision round. Tessera Corponation developed the VIR-9 for private security forces that operate across highly variable threat environments where carrying multiple weapon systems is impractical. The 12-stage impedance selector is mounted as a rotating collar around the trigger guard, operable with the firing hand without breaking grip — a deliberate ergonomic priority that took four design iterations to achieve. The rifle feeds from a 15-round magazine of ferromagnetic tungsten darts, each identical; the variation in terminal effect is produced entirely by the electromagnetic system rather than by different projectile types.

The weapon's primary limitation is thermal management.
