The ENAR-3 fires a tight cluster of ultra-fine conductive needles — between 12 and 48 per discharge, depending on the selected spread pattern — each carrying an individually modulated electrostatic charge. Unlike conventional electroshock weapons that rely on a single high-voltage arc, the Porcupine's array approach allows each needle to carry a different charge polarity and magnitude, creating an interference pattern within the target's nervous system rather than a simple override signal. The result is not unconsciousness but a targeted disruption of specific motor pathways — an operator can dial for hand tremor, full arm paralysis, loss of fine motor control, or total lower-body incapacitation while leaving the target fully conscious and vocal.

Ringo Corponation developed the ENAR-3 initially for their detention and interrogation division, where the ability to incapacitate without full unconsciousness had obvious operational value. The needle array design emerged from their bioelectric research partnership with a now-dissolved subsidiary that had been working on neural stimulation prosthetics; the same charge-modulation algorithms that allowed precise muscle activation for rehabilitation patients were, with relatively minor inversion, capable of precise muscle deactivation for detention purposes. The weapon underwent three years of classified field trials before Ringo released it to licensed security contractors.

The needles themselves are 80mm, hair-thin tungsten-alloy filaments with a hydrophilic coating that improves skin conductance on contact. They are single-use, loaded in pre-configured cassettes that color-code the charge pattern for quick selection under stress.
