The EDAP-1 projects a focused beam of ionized particles that induces a powerful electrostatic charge differential across the target's outermost dermal layer, causing them to adhere with significant force to any conductive or semi-conductive surface they contact — walls, floors, vehicle chassis, armor plating, or other people. The adhesion force scales with the surface area of contact and the conductivity of the target surface, but in typical urban environments, a fully charged target pressed against a ferroconcrete wall requires approximately 340 kilograms of force to detach. The charge dissipates naturally over four to seven minutes, or can be neutralized immediately with a grounding discharge.

The projector itself is a compact sidearm-profile weapon with a distinctive wide emitter disk at the muzzle. It fires silently, with only a faint blue corona visible at the emitter during discharge. Tessera Corponation designed it for rapid immobilization scenarios — apprehension, perimeter denial, and the specific problem of targets attempting to flee through tight urban terrain. A person adhered to a surface cannot run, and cannot easily use weapons if their hands are stuck to their sides or to each other. The weapon has a secondary 'overcharge' mode that increases the adhesion force to levels that can cause skin tearing if the target attempts to pull free, which Tessera's documentation carefully describes as 'enhanced compliance motivation.'

The street name 'Flypaper' is self-explanatory. 'The Embrace' is the term used by the GLMZ warrant enforcement community, delivered with the flat affect of people who have used it enough times that irony is no longer part of the delivery.
