The weapon's operating principle combines rapid endothermic chemical expansion with a focused pressure gradient that drives the cryogenic medium into surface pores and micro-fractures, causing catastrophic embrittlement in both organic and inorganic targets within 1.5 to 3 seconds of sustained exposure.

The distinctive characteristic of the CPE-2 is its secondary 'fracture pulse' feature — a piezoelectric vibration emitter integrated into the barrel shroud that, when activated after a freeze cycle, transmits a precisely tuned mechanical shock through a frozen target. Against armored personnel, this shatters limbs and joint assemblies without requiring direct impact force, effectively defeating articulated plate systems that would resist conventional trauma.
