The DeepDraw's environmental implications are contested. Extraction from deep aquifers is effectively mining -- the water was deposited over geological timescales and does not replenish on human timescales. Once the deep aquifers are emptied, they are gone. Environmental scientists have warned that deep extraction could destabilize geological formations, potentially causing subsidence in a city already threatened by rising sea levels.
