A mesh shield network consists of dozens or hundreds of low-power emitters — many of them components scavenged from damaged or decommissioned commercial systems — connected through improvised control networks and powered by whatever energy sources the community can aggregate: solar panels, micro-turbines, tapped power lines, and occasionally donated Ouroboros Energy credits.

The resulting barriers are weak by commercial standards — they might stop shrapnel, debris, and low-velocity projectiles but would fail against any concentrated weapons fire. They are also unstable, flickering and dropping as power fluctuates and individual emitters fail. Maintenance is constant and communal — mesh shield technicians are among the most valued members of any unprotected district, and their skills are traded and bartered like currency. The control software is typically open-source, written and maintained by volunteer programmers who share code across districts through darknet channels.

Despite their limitations, mesh shields represent something corponations find uncomfortable: barrier technology operating outside corporate control. Crucible Industries has repeatedly attempted to shut down mesh networks by claiming patent infringement on monopole emitter designs, but enforcement in unprotected districts is difficult when the enforcers would need to enter communities that view their shield as a survival necessity. Some mesh networks have evolved into sophisticated distributed systems that rival low-tier commercial installations, and the communities that maintain them have developed a fierce independence born from the knowledge that their protection is something they built themselves.
