The GravSkid PML-1 is a personal magnetic levitation platform -- colloquially and inevitably called a hoverboard despite Ringo's marketing department's objections -- that allows an individual rider to levitate up to 30 centimeters above any ferromagnetic surface and travel at speeds up to 80 kilometers per hour. The platform is approximately one meter long and 40 centimeters wide, weighing 12 kilograms with an internal power cell that provides four hours of continuous operation. The rider stands on the platform and controls direction and speed through weight shifting, assisted by gyroscopic stabilization and a low-level AI balance system that prevents the most catastrophic falls.

Ringo introduced the GravSkid as a premium personal transport device for Tier 4 and above, priced at 45,000 and marketed as the future of urban mobility. The technology is sound -- magnetic levitation over ferromagnetic surfaces is well-established and the GravSkid's implementation is reliable and elegant. The problem is GLMZ's infrastructure. The GravSkid only levitates over ferromagnetic surfaces -- steel, iron, certain alloys -- which means it works beautifully on the Spire's steel-floored plazas and elevated walkways and not at all on the Shelf's concrete and composite surfaces. The device is physically incapable of functioning in most of the city, effectively making it a luxury transport that works exclusively in neighborhoods wealthy enough to have the right kind of floor.

This limitation has not prevented the GravSkid from becoming one of the most culturally significant objects in GLMZ. In the upper tiers, GravSkid riders are ubiquitous -- gliding silently above the streets with a casual elegance that has become the defining visual signature of wealth. In the lower tiers, the GravSkid is an object of aspiration, resentment, and creative adaptation. Shelf engineers have modified GravSkids to operate over improvised ferromagnetic surfaces -- steel plates bolted to concrete, salvaged rail sections, even chains of magnetized scrap -- creating ad hoc hoverboard courses through the Shelf's industrial zones that have spawned the sport of 'mag surfing,' a combination of transportation and performance art that is to the GravSkid what skateboarding was to smooth pavement.
