The PyroGenesis PWC-5 is a plasma gasification reactor that converts virtually any waste material -- organic, synthetic, toxic, or radioactive -- into synthesis gas, vitrified slag, and electrical power. The system generates an argon plasma arc at temperatures exceeding 7,000 degrees Celsius, hot enough to break down any molecular structure into its constituent elements. Waste material fed into the reactor is reduced to elemental components in seconds: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen combine into synthesis gas that can be burned for power or refined into chemical feedstocks; everything else melts into an inert glass-like slag that can be used as construction aggregate. The process is thermodynamically self-sustaining above a minimum feed rate -- the energy released by molecular breakdown exceeds the energy required to maintain the plasma arc, generating a net power output of approximately 15 megawatts per installation.

Crucible operates fourteen PyroGenesis installations in GLMZ, processing an estimated 60% of the city's total waste output and generating enough power to supply roughly 200,000 residences. The installations are positioned in the Shelf's industrial zones, where their considerable noise, heat, and atmospheric emissions are absorbed by communities that have no political leverage to object. Crucible pays licensing fees to the Meridian Quorum for waste processing contracts and sells the generated power back to the grid at rates that make the entire operation enormously profitable -- the company is paid to take garbage and paid again for the electricity it produces from that garbage.

The PyroGenesis's ability to process radioactive and toxic waste has made it the technology of last resort for materials too dangerous to store conventionally. Crucible accepts classified waste streams from multiple corponations -- materials whose composition is not disclosed under hazardous material exemptions that Crucible's lobbyists wrote into the Quorum's environmental code. Critics have long argued that processing unknown materials at plasma temperatures risks generating equally unknown byproducts, but the argument has gained little traction because the alternative -- stockpiling toxic waste in a city at sea level -- is worse.
