The engineering solution to the most basic problem in high-speed tube transit: at Mach 6, accelerating from rest in 11 kilometers requires approximately 189 meters per second squared — nineteen times Earth's gravitational acceleration. No biological organism survives 19g. The GIDS-4 is why they do.

The principle is not mysticism. It is electromagnetism applied at scale.

A conventional vehicle accelerates its passengers by contact: the floor accelerates, the seat accelerates, the seat back presses against the passenger's spine, the passenger's spine transmits force to the torso, and so on through the body. Every contact surface is a pressure point. At 19g, every pressure point is a crushing force.

The GIDS-4 eliminates contact as the primary force transfer mechanism. The superconducting coil arrays embedded in the slug's interior walls generate a field gradient that penetrates the full cross-section of the passenger cabin. This field acts on every ferromagnetic and conductive component simultaneously — seat frames, floor panels, structural members, the metallic components of every augmentation and BCI implant distributed through the passengers' bodies. The field does not push the slug's shell and wait for the shell to push the seats and wait for the seats to push the people. It pushes everything at once.

The result is distributed inertial loading. Instead of 19g transmitted through two contact points — seat back and floor — the force is spread across every conductive component in the passenger's body. A fully augmented Tier 4 passenger with skeletal reinforcement, neural mesh, and circulatory augments may have seventy or more ferromagnetic components distributed through their body. Each one receives and transmits the field's acceleration force independently. The net sensation is approximately 0.3g — roughly the feeling of standing in an ascending elevator, sustained for the 47 seconds of the acceleration phase.

The system is not perfect. Passengers without augmentations — rare in the GLMZ, more common in cargo-adjacent personal slugs with Remnant transit waivers — experience higher effective acceleration because the field has fewer body-internal components to couple to. Ferrogate's internal documentation acknowledges an effective ceiling of 0.9g for unaugmented passengers in GIDS-4 equipped slugs. The public documentation does not include this figure. The public documentation does not mention augmentation as a variable at all.

The 8 Hz vibration that passengers feel throughout transit is a residual artifact of the GIDS coil switching frequency — the field cycles 8 times per second as each coil section hands off to the next. Engineers refer to this as 'coil tick.' Passengers call it the pulse of the tube. People standing over Pulse corridors in the Gray Zone feel it through the ground.
