They are deliberately designed to be intimidating but obviously non-sentient. Their movements are mechanical, their responses are scripted, and their decision-making is rule-based (if X then Y, no interpretation). This is the point. A sentient security guard might hesitate, negotiate, show mercy. A Goliath follows its rules. If the rules say shoot, it shoots. If the rules say hold, it holds. The Shelf calls them 'Corporate Furniture' because they have about as much personality as a desk. The synthetic rights movement ignores them because there is nothing to advocate for — a Goliath has the inner life of a traffic light. Corponations love them because they are reliable, cheap to maintain, and will never file a harassment complaint, join a union, or develop a conscience. Goliaths are the proof that you can build a machine that is powerful, useful, and utterly empty. The synthetic personhood movement finds them existentially reassuring — they are the clear example of 'not a person' that makes the case for personhood easier by contrast. |
