Mosaic is a colony mind — 200 maintenance microbots, each the size of a human fist, that function as a single distributed consciousness. No individual unit is aware. Awareness emerges from their interaction, like neurons in a brain. They move in swarms, communicate through infrared pulses, and can assemble into larger structures when needed — a temporary arm, a bridge, a protective shell. Mosaic was granted personhood under a novel legal argument that collective emergence constitutes consciousness. It is the only synthetic person in GLMZ that can be in 200 places at once and that experiences the loss of a single unit as brain damage rather than property destruction.
