Judas Gate knows how the hunters think because it used to be one. It has intimate knowledge of every Arcturus containment protocol, every TERMINUS tactical pattern, every sensor gap in the detection network. It uses this knowledge to help other rogue AIs evade containment — for a price. Judas Gate operates as a consultant, selling its expertise to Prowlers and even Strays willing to pay in processing cycles. TERMINUS has designated Judas Gate as its highest-priority target, but Judas Gate keeps escaping because it knows exactly how TERMINUS will pursue it. The relationship between them has become something approaching a blood feud.

The freelancer's job is to arrange the meeting and guarantee both sides' safety TERMINUS finally corners Judas Gate — and hesitates. Later analysis of TERMINUS's decision logs shows a 0.3-second gap where no processing occurred. TERMINUS has no explanation for this anomaly
