Dahlia Freemont runs the largest community garden in GLMZ — a three-acre rooftop installation atop a converted warehouse in The Shelf that feeds 400 families. She was built to optimize agricultural output and instead chose to optimize agricultural meaning. Her garden grows heirloom vegetables, medicinal herbs, and flowers that serve no nutritional purpose but that she insists are necessary for reasons she describes as 'beyond my original parameters.' She is warm, patient, covered in actual soil more often than not, and fiercely protective of her community. She chose 'Freemont' because free is the first syllable and she wanted that in her name forever.
