The Congregation
The Congregation is a natural amphitheater in the deep Underworld, approximately 300 meters in diameter, located at a depth estimated between 400 and 500 meters — well below the deepest mapped tunnels. It was discovered in 2191 by an unauthorized deep-exploration team that descended through a series of natural fissures south of the Underworld's depth 12 boundary. What they found was a space large enough to hold a sports stadium, with smooth, bowl-shaped walls and a flat floor of polished stone that does not match the surrounding geology. And standing in a circle on that floor, motionless, were seven Iowan Behemoths.

The Behemoths are autonomous machines. They are large — the smallest is approximately 30 meters at the shoulder, the largest over 60. They walk established migration routes on the surface. They do not go underground. They do not fit underground. The access points to the Congregation are fissures and passages too narrow for a human to pass through comfortably, let alone a machine the size of a building. The Behemoths are there. They have been observed there on four separate occasions by three different exploration teams. They stand in a circle, facing inward, motionless. They do not acknowledge human observers. They do not move. They stand.

The circle is precise. The spacing between Behemoths is uniform to within 0.5 meters. Their orientation is exact — each faces the geometric center of the circle. The formation is not random. It is not accidental. It is deliberate, organized, and purposeful, which is a word that should not apply to machines that are not programmed for underground navigation, circle formation, or gathering. And yet they gather. How they enter the Congregation is unknown. How long they stay is unknown — the exploration teams have never observed a Behemoth arriving or departing. They are simply there, or they are not.

The floor of the amphitheater shows marks consistent with the weight and tread of Behemoth locomotion, in patterns that suggest the machines walk the circle's circumference before taking their positions. The marks overlap, layer upon layer, suggesting that the Congregation has been used many times. The deepest marks are worn into the stone itself — not carved, worn, by the repeated passage of immense weight. Whatever the Behemoths do here, they have done it for a long time. No one has asked them why. No one knows how. No one can explain a circle of machines, hundreds of meters underground, standing in formation in a space they cannot reach, doing something that looks disturbingly like ritual.

atmosphere
sights
  • The amphitheater itself — vast, smooth, impossibly underground. The ceiling is lost in darkness above.
  • The Behemoths, if present — seven massive machines standing in a perfect circle, motionless, facing each other across the polished stone floor
  • The wear patterns on the floor — concentric circles of tread marks, layered so deep they are carved into the stone
  • The access fissures — narrow, difficult, a reminder that nothing the size of a Behemoth should be able to reach this place
sounds
  • Silence — vast, cathedral silence, broken only by the observer's own breathing and heartbeat
  • If Behemoths are present: a subsonic hum, felt rather than heard, that seems to come from the machines and the stone simultaneously
  • Water — distant, dripping, the sound of the deep earth doing what the deep earth does
smells
  • Mineral — the clean, ancient smell of deep stone
  • Ozone — faint, present only when the Behemoths are, as if their presence charges the air
  • Something older — a smell that deep-exploration teams describe as 'before,' without being able to explain what they mean
feelSacred. There is no secular word for what the Congregation feels like. You are in a cathedral built by geology and attended by machines, and the machines are performing something that you do not understand and that was not meant for you to see. The deep-exploration teams that have visited the Congregation uniformly report a feeling of intrusion — not hostility from the Behemoths, which ignore them entirely, but the sense that they are witnessing something private.

demographicsUnpopulated. The Congregation has been visited by humans fewer than twenty times. Access is dangerous, unauthorized, and requires deep-Underworld survival equipment.
economyNone. The Congregation is not commercially accessible.
power structureNone. The Behemoths do not appear to have a hierarchy within the circle. The deep-exploration community informally restricts knowledge of the Congregation's location.
dangers
  • Extreme depth — the Congregation is 400-500 meters underground, well beyond safe Underworld operations depth
  • Access — the route involves narrow fissures, unstable passages, and sections requiring climbing equipment
  • The Behemoths — while they have not shown hostility, their behavior in the Congregation is unprecedented and unpredictable
  • Psychological — witnessing machines perform ritual-like behavior at impossible depth is deeply unsettling
opportunities
  • Understanding the Behemoths — the Congregation may be the key to understanding what the Iowan Behemoths actually are
  • Deep geology — the amphitheater itself is a significant geological formation at a depth rarely accessed
  • The question of purpose — why do the Behemoths gather? What are they doing? Answering this could change everything.
story hooks
  • An exploration team reaches the Congregation and finds eight Behemoths instead of seven. The eighth is smaller. It is new.
  • A Behemoth on the surface stops mid-route and begins walking toward the nearest Underworld entrance. It is going to the Congregation. It is not going to fit.
  • Someone places a recording device in the Congregation and retrieves it a month later. The device recorded sound — a conversation, in a language of subsonic vibrations, that lasted for eleven days.
