Adaptex-RM is a magneto-rheological composite textile developed by Tessera Materials in collaboration with Veilweave Textiles, consisting of iron-rich particle chains suspended in a polymer matrix that transitions from supple fabric-like flexibility to near-rigid plate hardness within 40 milliseconds when an embedded micro-coil network generates a directed magnetic field. The material can be tuned to any stiffness point along its range — not just two states — allowing gradual or dynamic stiffness profiling across different zones of a garment or panel simultaneously. Powered by inductive charging, the system holds a charge sufficient for 6 hours of active stiffness cycling.
