An emergent modification in the honeybee (Apis mellifera) populations that recolonized GLMZ following the regional colony collapse of 2120-2125. The recovered bee populations — which began reappearing around 2186 from unknown origin — construct hive comb using geometric patterns that deviate significantly from the standard hexagonal tessellation used by honeybees for over 100 million years. The new comb incorporates hexagonal, pentagonal, heptagonal, and irregularly shaped cells in patterns that computational analysis identifies as mechanically superior to standard hexagonal comb: stronger, better at distributing structural loads, and incorporating internal channels for ventilation and thermal regulation. The modification appears to affect construction behavior rather than physiology — the bees themselves are morphologically standard, but their building instincts produce architecture that should be beyond the capacity of insect cognition to design. The modification co-occurs with new waggle dance patterns that apiarists cannot decode and honey production containing trace compounds from unidentified botanical sources.
