A pest control specialist is brought in and identifies Mesh Runner sign, but the quantity of missing inventory is far beyond what rats eating supplies would account for. Something is using the rats as a distraction, or the rats are being deliberately introduced. A Tier 1 resident has caught a Mesh Runner and is keeping it, fascinated by its compression ability — they've started documenting it obsessively and have made contact with an underground researcher who claims the animal's cartilage chemistry is unlike anything in the published literature. The researcher is very interested, and not entirely reassuring about why.
