The Cruciform Remnant
The Cruciform Remnant is what remains of traditional, orthodox Christianity in GLMZ — a conservative congregation of roughly 8,000 adherents who reject the theological innovations of the Church of the Ascendant Signal, the syncretic experiments of the Convergence Ministry, and the tech-worship of every movement that tries to make God compatible with BCI firmware updates. The Remnant worships in the old way: hymns, scripture, sacraments, a human pastor standing behind a physical pulpit speaking words that have been spoken for two thousand years.

This is not nostalgia. It's stubbornness, and it's theology. The Remnant holds that God's revelation is complete in scripture, that the human soul needs no augmentation, and that the church's mission is unchanged by technology: feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, proclaim the gospel. They don't oppose augmentation as categorically as the Unbroken Flesh Tabernacle — the Remnant's position is that augmentation is a medical and personal choice, not a spiritual one — but they refuse to incorporate it into worship or theology. God is not a frequency. God is not a computation. God is God, and the fact that humans invented new machines doesn't change anything about the divine nature.

The Remnant's eight churches are plain, physical, and old-fashioned. No BCI integration. No synchronized consciousness experiences. No algorithmic liturgy. Wooden pews, stained glass, the smell of candle wax. In a city of constant sensory augmentation, walking into a Remnant church is like stepping into a silence you didn't know you needed. This is, paradoxically, the Remnant's greatest recruitment tool: they offer an experience of unplugged, unmediated, genuinely quiet worship that nothing else in GLMZ provides.

mottoThe cross stood before the chrome. It will stand after.
ideologyOrthodox Christian theology, unchanged by technological context. God is sovereign, scripture is authoritative, the church's mission is pastoral. Augmentation is a personal choice with no spiritual significance. The Remnant considers the tech-worship movements heretical and the anti-augmentation movements theologically misguided (the body is not sacred because it's unaugmented; it's sacred because God made it, augmented or not).
territoryEight churches across GLMZ: three in the Circuit, two in Old Harbor, two in the Shelf, and one in the Laceworks. The Laceworks church — St. Catherine's — is the oldest continuously operating church in GLMZ.
leadershipBishop Tomasz Okonkwo-Reyes, a 63-year-old pastor who has led the Remnant for eighteen years. He is quiet, scholarly, and possesses a moral authority that extends well beyond his small congregation.
methods
  • Traditional worship services with no technological augmentation
  • Pastoral care and counseling
  • Food banks and shelter programs in the Shelf and Old Harbor
  • Hospital and prison chaplaincy
  • Theological education through a small seminary
  • Quiet moral witness — being visibly present in communities without demanding anything in return
resources
  • 8,000 committed congregants across all tiers
  • Eight church buildings, several of historical significance
  • Bishop Okonkwo-Reyes's moral authority and extensive pastoral network
  • Food bank and shelter infrastructure
  • A small seminary training future pastors
  • St. Catherine's in the Laceworks — a physical monument to continuity
narrative functionThe Remnant asks whether something is lost when faith adapts to every new technology — and whether unchanged tradition is wisdom or fossil.
story hooks
  • Bishop Okonkwo-Reyes has been asked to mediate a dispute between two corponations — not because he has any power, but because he's the only person in GLMZ both sides believe is genuinely honest. What he learns during mediation could change everything.
  • St. Catherine's has been designated for 'architectural reclamation' by Axiom — demolition. The Remnant is prepared to occupy the building. Axiom is prepared to wait. But something in St. Catherine's basement predates the church, and both sides want it.
