The Underlayer Collective
The Underlayer Collective is an underground art movement of approximately 300 active artists and several thousand supporters who produce and distribute art outside the corporate-controlled cultural channels that Vantablack Media dominates. In GLMZ, where most media is produced by or for corponations, the Underlayer exists to make art that no one commissioned, no one approved, and no one can profit from — art that exists because someone needed to make it.
The Collective's output spans every medium: graffiti that transforms Shelf walls into galleries, music produced in bedroom studios and distributed through pirate networks, theater performed in abandoned buildings for audiences who pay what they can, literature printed on hand-operated presses and left in public spaces, sculpture assembled from industrial waste and installed in empty lots, and BCI-native art — experiences designed for augmented perception that can't be reproduced in any other medium.
The Underlayer is not politically organized and resists attempts to turn it into a movement. Individual artists have political views — many are deeply critical of corporate culture — but the Collective itself claims no ideology beyond the conviction that art matters, that it should be accessible, and that the corponations' monopoly on culture is as dangerous as their monopoly on anything else. This political ambiguity frustrates allies who want the Collective to be a resistance tool, but it also protects it — Vantablack Media can't suppress a movement that doesn't have demands to refuse.
