The Communion of Broken Masks
The Communion of Broken Masks is a small, intense spiritual community of roughly 1,800 adherents built around the ritual practice of identity deconstruction. Drawing from theatrical traditions, Jungian psychology, and West African masquerade spiritual practices, the Communion teaches that every person wears layers of social masks — identities constructed by family, corporation, tier, culture, and augmentation — and that genuine selfhood can only be discovered by ritually breaking those masks, one by one.

Communion rituals involve elaborate ceremonies where participants don physical masks representing their social identities — their corporate role, their tier status, their augmented self-image, their family expectations — and then, through guided ritual, break them. The breaking is physical (ceramic masks are literally shattered), psychological (participants confront the gap between who they perform and who they are), and sometimes augmented (BCIs running identity-deconstruction protocols that temporarily suppress the social-performance software that most people's neural interfaces run constantly).

The movement attracts people in crisis — those experiencing identity dissolution from augmentation changes, corporate restructuring that destroys their professional self-concept, or the quiet desperation of realizing that every aspect of their life has been performed for an audience. The Communion doesn't promise to rebuild what it breaks. It promises that what remains after breaking is real.

aliases
  • Broken Masks
  • The Communion
  • Mask Wearers
mottoOnly in breaking can the true face be revealed.
ideologyIdentity is performance. The self is what remains when the performance stops. The Communion's theology draws from theatrical theory, depth psychology, and West African spiritual traditions to argue that the masks humanity wears are not protective but imprisoning, and that freedom begins with breaking them.
territoryThree ritual spaces: one in the Circuit, one in Old Harbor, one in the Shelf. Each is designed as a theater-temple hybrid.
leadershipThe Mask Breaker — a woman named Adunni Chen-Baptiste — is a former theatrical director and Jungian therapist who synthesized the Communion's unique practice from her dual expertise.
methods
  • Mask-breaking rituals combining physical ceremony with psychological process
  • BCI-assisted identity deconstruction protocols
  • Individual counseling for participants experiencing identity crisis
  • Community support for those in the process of reconstruction
  • Public performances that double as recruitment and cultural commentary
  • Workshops on identity, performance, and authenticity
resources
  • 1,800 adherents including many in therapeutic and creative professions
  • Three ritual theater-temple spaces
  • Adunni Chen-Baptiste's therapeutic and theatrical expertise
  • BCI identity-deconstruction protocols developed in-house
  • Community support networks for members in transition
  • Cultural credibility from the Communion's theatrical and artistic quality
narrative functionThe Communion asks the most uncomfortable question in a city of augmented identities: who are you when everything that can be taken away has been taken away?
story hooks
  • A Communion ritual has gone wrong — a participant's identity deconstruction has not reversed. They have lost all sense of self and cannot function. The Communion's methods have never produced this result before, and Adunni suspects the participant's BCI was tampered with before the ritual.
  • A corporate HR department has sent employees to the Communion as part of a 'personal development program.' The Communion's rituals are causing these employees to question their corporate loyalty so thoroughly that the employer wants the program shut down.
