The Pure Hand
The Pure Hand is an anti-augmentation militant group operating across the GLMZ, with their largest cell — about seventy members — based in the remnants of Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood. They believe that cyberware is an abomination, that neural interfaces are a leash disguised as a tool, and that the augmentation industry exists to make human beings into upgradable products for corporate profit. They're not entirely wrong about that last part, which is what makes them dangerous.

The movement started as a philosophical position and became a gang when philosophy met desperation. Early Pure Hand members were people who couldn't afford augments and reframed their poverty as moral superiority. But the movement attracted genuine ideologues — former bioethicists, religious traditionalists, people who'd seen augmentation addiction destroy someone they loved. The group hardened after a series of confrontations with augmented criminals who targeted Purist neighborhoods specifically because they knew the residents couldn't fight back with chrome. The Pure Hand learned to fight back with numbers, improvised weapons, EMP devices, and a willingness to absorb casualties that augmented opponents found unnerving.

The crew manufactures crude but effective EMP grenades and disruption devices that can temporarily disable cyberware. They've also developed chemical agents that accelerate augment rejection — a particularly cruel weapon that can turn a person's own implants against them over a period of weeks. Their fighters train in unaugmented combat techniques and pack tactics designed to overwhelm individual augmented opponents. Against a single chromed-up enforcer, a Pure Hand squad of eight can be surprisingly effective.

The movement's weakness is that their ideology alienates potential allies. In a world where most people have at least basic augmentation, being militantly anti-chrome makes you a fringe group by definition.

ideologyHuman biological purity. The Pure Hand believes that augmentation is a trap — that it makes individuals dependent on corporate supply chains for maintenance, vulnerable to remote exploitation, and gradually less human. They advocate for complete rejection of cyberware and neural interfaces. The moderate wing wants personal choice. The militant wing wants augmentation banned. The extreme wing wants augmented people 'cleansed.'
territoryMilwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood (primary cell). Smaller cells in Detroit's Corktown, Cleveland's Tremont, and Chicago's Bridgeport.
methods
  • EMP warfare — crude but effective electromagnetic pulse devices that disable cyberware in a radius
  • Rejection agents — chemical weapons that accelerate augment rejection syndrome in targeted individuals
  • Pack tactics — squad-based unaugmented combat designed to overwhelm individual augmented opponents
  • Propaganda — leaflets, pirate broadcasts, and net posts arguing against augmentation culture
  • Clinic sabotage — targeting augment clinics and supply chains to reduce access to cyberware
  • Community organizing — building support networks for unaugmented people in augmentation-dominant areas
resources
  • EMP grenades and disruption devices manufactured in basement workshops
  • Chemical rejection agents — their most feared and closely guarded weapon
  • Seventy committed fighters trained in unaugmented combat and pack tactics
  • A network of cells across four GLMZ cities providing mutual support and intelligence
  • Community support from unaugmented populations who feel marginalized
  • Safe houses in neighborhoods where augmentation is rare and Purists are welcomed
story hooks
  • The Pure Hand has developed a new rejection agent that works on neural interfaces — causing psychosis in the augmented
  • A Pure Hand cell is planning an attack on a major augment clinic that also serves as a community health center
  • A freelancer with augments needs to move through Purist territory — the Pure Hand doesn't allow chrome on their streets
  • The moderate and militant wings are fracturing, and both sides want outside help securing resources
  • A Pure Hand member was secretly augmented to infiltrate a corporate facility — the hypocrisy is tearing them apart
