The Packet Rats
The Packet Rats are a crew of fifteen data thieves operating out of a decommissioned telecom switching station in Gary, Indiana — a location chosen specifically because Gary's infrastructure is so degraded that nobody monitors it, but its fiber trunk lines still connect to the GLMZ's main data backbone. The Rats tap into those trunk lines and siphon data like mosquitoes on an artery. Corporate communications, financial transactions, personal messages, logistics manifests — anything that passes through unencrypted or weakly encrypted channels, the Rats capture, sort, and sell.
The crew is young — average age twenty-three — and almost entirely self-taught. They grew up in the net, learned to code before they learned to fight, and view physical reality as an inconvenient obstacle between them and the data streams they live in. Several members run neural interfaces that keep them jacked in nearly twenty hours a day, which is doing visible damage to their health and social skills but makes them extraordinarily fast in digital space. They can crack mid-tier encryption in minutes, spoof corporate authentication protocols, and navigate network architecture that would baffle a legitimate security team.
What the Packet Rats lack is physical capability. They're hackers, not fighters. Their switching station has a single reinforced door and a handful of scavenged weapons that most of the crew barely know how to use. They survive by being hard to find, by being useful to people who are dangerous, and by having enough dirt on enough people that eliminating them would trigger a catastrophic data dump. The dead man's switch is their best defense — a distributed system that will broadcast their entire stolen archive if the crew goes dark for more than 48 hours.
