The Last Mile
The Last Mile is a crew of about twenty couriers and drivers who specialize in getting cargo through the most dangerous final stretch of any delivery route — the last mile between a drop point and its destination, through territory that automated logistics won't enter and corporate drivers refuse to navigate. In the GLMZ's patchwork of corporate zones, gang territories, and lawless stretches, the last mile of any delivery is often the hardest, and the Last Mile built a business on solving that problem.
The crew operates across the entire GLMZ from a loose network of safe houses and vehicle caches. Members drive armored ground vehicles, ride modded motorcycles, and in extreme cases make deliveries on foot through areas where vehicles draw too much attention. Every Last Miler knows the territories — which gangs control which streets, what the current toll rates are, who can be bribed and who has to be avoided. This knowledge is updated constantly through a shared intelligence network that makes the crew function as a single organism even when members are hundreds of miles apart.
Last Mile couriers carry anything legal or illegal, but they charge a premium for dangerous cargo — weapons, high-value data, volatile materials, or anything that makes the courier a target. Their guarantee is absolute: the cargo arrives or the fee is refunded. This has cost them members. Three Last Milers have been killed in the past year making deliveries that saner people would have refused. The crew memorializes them and raises rates for routes where people have died.
