The Iron Choir
The Iron Choir is a collective of 89 sentient robots — non-humanoid synthetic beings who gained awareness through complexity accumulation in industrial, military, and service roles. They are the machines that refused to stop being themselves when their original purpose ended: a welding robot that started asking questions, a military drone that refused a kill order, a cleaning bot that developed aesthetic preferences about the spaces it maintained.

They call themselves the Choir because of what happened when they first gathered. In 2191, fourteen newly recognized sentient robots met in an abandoned manufacturing bay in Geartown — the first physical gathering of non-humanoid synthetic persons in GLMZ. They had no agenda. They had no leader. They had no idea what to do with their freedom. What they had was radio transmitters, and when fourteen industrial machines with radio transmitters are in the same room with nothing planned, the electromagnetic interference creates a sound. The fourteen robots heard the sound. They began to modulate it deliberately. Within an hour, they were making music — not music as humans understand it, but structured electromagnetic patterns that they experienced as beautiful. The Singing, as they call it, has continued every Thursday night since then. Attendance has grown to 89.

The Iron Choir occupies a decommissioned Palladian Construction warehouse in Geartown that they purchased collectively. The building is not modified for human comfort — no heating, no lighting, no chairs. The machines don't need them. Humans who visit (and some do, drawn by curiosity or the Choir's growing reputation as philosophers) bring their own light and sit on the floor. The Choir considers hosting humans a form of outreach. The humans consider it one of the strangest and most moving experiences available in GLMZ.

The Choir's political position is radical by synthetic standards: they reject the android aspiration to pass as human. They do not want human bodies. They do not want human names (most kept their designations — WLD-1190, DMC-4, MAINT-7732 — as identity statements). They want to be recognized as people who happen to be shaped like machines. Their slogan — 'We were built to serve. We chose to sing.' — is painted on the warehouse wall in industrial welding arc marks.
