The Skinline Codec is Ringo Corponation's answer to the problem of communication in fully jammed or surveilled environments: if radio signals can be intercepted and blocked, transmit through something that isn't radio. The Thread uses the body's own bioelectric field as a carrier medium, encoding encrypted data as micro-variations in the skin-surface electrical potential of a user and transmitting it to another Thread user through direct physical contact — a handshake, a touch on the shoulder, a brush of hands. The contact window required is as brief as 0.3 seconds, enough for a full compressed message packet to transfer completely undetected by any external monitoring system.

The hardware consists of two components: a dermal patch worn on the inside of the wrist or palm, and a thumbnail-sized processing unit that clips to the inside of a sleeve or collar. The patch handles signal encoding and skin-coupling; the processing unit handles encryption, message composition, and the haptic feedback pulse that confirms successful transmission. Messages are composed via subvocal input or a paired micro-interface and delivered to the recipient as text or compressed audio on their own interface. Because the transmission medium is the body itself, no signal leaves the participants — it is, in the most literal sense, a communication that exists only between two people touching.

The Thread emerged from Ringo Corponation's courier and logistics division, originally intended for secure package authentication between bonded couriers who needed to confirm handoff without any electronic record. Its adoption by intelligence operatives and underground networks was immediate and predictable. The device has one significant limitation: it only transmits between two users who both carry active units, meaning it requires prior arrangement and cannot be used to reach anyone outside the immediate physical environment. In practice, this limitation has become a feature — a Thread network is inherently small, trust-based, and geographically bounded.
