It does not connect to the mesh. It infiltrates the connection of something that is already connected, riding the existing authenticated session of a nearby node — a traffic signal, a building management system, a licensed commercial relay — without altering that node's behavior in any measurable way. To the mesh, the Leech does not exist.

Ringo Corponation developed the Leech as an infrastructure audit tool, ostensibly for identifying unauthorized mesh connections by demonstrating how easily they could be established — a rationale that satisfied regulators and provided the legal framework for a product that is, in practice, a highly sophisticated unauthorized access device. The Leech's Phantom Session Architecture generates a synthetic traffic signature that mimics the statistical profile of the host node's normal data throughput, distributing Leech communications invisibly within the host's existing traffic patterns. Extracting the Leech's communications from a captured traffic log requires knowing the Leech's specific session key — without it, the data is indistinguishable from the host node's routine transmissions.

The Leech is a tool of economic necessity as much as operational security. In GLMZ's lower precincts, licensed mesh access is expensive, monitored, and increasingly tiered — the richest users get the cleanest channels, and the poorest make do with degraded public access points that log everything. The Leech provides clean, unmonitored connectivity by stealing it from infrastructure that has already paid for the privilege. This has made it ubiquitous far beyond the criminal and intelligence communities Ringo nominally targets — it is found in community centers, underground clinics, and housing collectives that cannot afford licensed access and will not tolerate surveillance of what little connectivity they have.
