Originally developed for coordinating sensor networks across Ironclad's vast agri-industrial growing facilities, the Fungal Spore Relay is a biological mesh networking system that propagates communication nodes through the dispersal of engineered fungal spores. Each spore carries a dormant piezoelectric transmitter lattice — microscopic, printed directly onto the spore's outer membrane — that activates upon contact with a moisture-rich surface and begins exchanging encrypted handshake signals with nearby activated spores. A sufficiently dense spore cloud, dispersed through a target area, self-organizes into a low-bandwidth mesh network within four to eight hours of dispersal.

The system was designed for Ironclad's agricultural monitoring applications, where running physical cable across hundreds of hectares is impractical. Its adaptation for urban use in GLMZ was not officially sanctioned. The spores, dispersed from a canister roughly the size of a thermos, are effectively invisible once airborne and leave no obvious physical trace — they settle into wall surfaces, ventilation systems, and organic material, making network removal nearly impossible without chemical treatment of the entire affected area. The mesh degrades naturally over approximately three weeks as the spore membranes break down.

Ironclad has issued multiple public statements distancing itself from the device's use in urban surveillance and covert communications, but the black market modification kits that adapt agricultural canisters for urban dispersal are manufactured in GLMZ's industrial districts using Ironclad's own spore stock, diverted from legitimate supply chains. The company's attempts to introduce a sterility kill-switch into the spore production line have been undermined repeatedly by employees on the take.
