Beginning at sundown on the first Saturday of October and running until sundown Sunday, the Long Table is a city-wide tradition in which residents are invited to bring food to shared tables set up in public corridors, transit hubs, parks, and plazas across all tiers — with the explicit norm that anyone who sits down eats, regardless of whether they brought anything. The tradition originated in 2214 from a Tier 2 transit worker's strike kitchen organized by Amara Oduya-Bernstein, which fed striking workers and their Shelf neighbors for eleven days and attracted Tier 3 solidarity volunteers who had never been to the Shelf before. The Long Table's informal rule — 'you sit, you're fed, you stay as long as you want' — is its only organizing principle.
