Stratum
Stratum is a compositional genre built on the principle of perceptual stratification: a single Stratum piece contains between three and nine discrete layers of music, each accessible only to listeners with a specific level of auditory augmentation. The base layer — audible to unaugmented human ears — is typically a spare, functional piece of music: pleasant, competent, but unremarkable, often drawing on traditional acoustic instrumentation. Listeners with entry-level chrome audio augmentation perceive a second layer embedded in frequencies above human hearing, which typically recontextualizes the base layer harmonically, adding complexity and emotional depth. Each subsequent layer, accessible only with progressively more sophisticated augmentation, adds further compositional material — countermelodies, polyrhythmic percussion structures, lyrical content, and at the highest augmentation tiers, what practitioners call 'the architecture': a spatial and tonal framework that makes the entire composition cohere into something that listeners describe as overwhelming in the best possible sense. The experience of hearing a full nine-layer Stratum piece with military-grade auditory augmentation has been compared to 'standing inside a cathedral that is also a conversation.'

Stratum originated in the Circuit in the 2200s among augmented factory workers who discovered that their industrial-grade hearing augments — installed for occupational safety, not music — could perceive frequencies in recordings that others could not. Early Stratum composers were deliberately encoding hidden layers in otherwise unremarkable music, creating a private language between augmented listeners. The genre has since expanded across all tiers, though the experience varies radically: a Tier 5 listener with full-spectrum neural audio augmentation and a Shelf worker with a decade-old occupational hearing implant are technically listening to the same piece but experiencing fundamentally different compositions.

audienceAny listener with auditory augmentation; the depth of experience scales directly with augmentation quality; unaugmented listeners can access base layers; the genre has a dedicated following among augmented Circuit workers, chrome enthusiasts, and Tier 4-5 audiophiles who invest in premium augmentation partly for Stratum access
cultural impactStratum made auditory augmentation culturally desirable rather than merely functional for the first time in GLMZ's history, contributing to a measurable increase in elective hearing augmentation among Tier 2-3 populations in the 2210s. The genre also created an unexpected solidarity between augmented workers of different tiers — a Shelf laborer with occupational chrome and a Tier 4 professional with elective augmentation might have access to the same Stratum layers, creating a shared aesthetic experience that crosses class lines in ways almost nothing else in GLMZ does. Vantablack Media subsidiaries have released numerous licensed Stratum albums but have been accused of deliberately compressing the higher layers in consumer releases, making the full experience available only through premium neural spa subscriptions.
known fans
  • augmented factory and construction workers in the Circuit
  • chrome enthusiasts and augmentation hobbyists
  • Tier 4 audiophiles
  • augmentation clinics who use Stratum to demonstrate the perceptual benefits of upgrades
  • unaugmented listeners who seek out base-layer Stratum as a form of 'hearing what others hear' meditation
story hooks
  • A character with standard augmentation discovers a layer in a widely distributed Stratum piece that no one else seems to be able to access — a layer that appears to contain a message directed at them specifically.
  • A Vantablack Media subsidiary is sued by a composer who claims the label deliberately degraded the upper layers of her Stratum album in distribution, making the full composition inaccessible without a proprietary augmentation subscription — but the legal question of whether a layer that most people cannot hear constitutes a commercial product is untested.
  • A Shelf community uses the base layer of a Stratum piece as a public anthem, unaware that the augmented layers above it contain content its composer would never have intended for public use.
