Bone Weather
Released in 2191 on bootleg data chips and pirate neural feeds simultaneously, Bone Weather is a raw protest compilation assembled by an anonymous collective of Shelf musicians in the aftermath of the Tier Restructuring Act, which effectively gutted the Circuit's housing subsidies and pushed thousands of families into Tier 1 conditions. The album features seventeen tracks from twelve different acts — none of whom used their legal names — recorded in basement stairwells, flooded parking structures, and the back rooms of unlicensed repair shops. The production is deliberately rough: clipped vocals, machines that hum with electrical interference, drums played on salvaged piping. The music draws on West African call-and-response traditions, Andean huayno rhythms, and the grinding industrial drone of Nordic black metal, filtered through the specific acoustic misery of the Shelf.

The compilation's most famous track, 'Φ0 and Still Owing,' became an anthem before Vantablack Media's legal division could identify the performers. The chorus — a seventeen-voice unison chant recorded in a stairwell — was reportedly hummed by workers during the 2191 Circuit labor slowdown that briefly paralyzed three of GLMZ's automated logistics hubs. Corporate censors flagged the album within six weeks of release; physical chip copies became contraband. A cleaned-up, unauthorized 'archival remaster' circulated on encrypted mesh in 2204, and by 2210 the album had acquired near-mythological status on the Shelf, where original chip copies trade for upward of Φ400 in back-channel markets.

cultural impactBone Weather is the most frequently cited album in academic studies of the 2191 Circuit labor actions, though those studies must be careful about how they cite it given ongoing corporate suppression orders. On the Shelf, owning an original chip is a statement of identity and political allegiance. The album introduced the term 'bone weather' into GLMZ slang — a phrase for the specific exhaustion of poverty that settles into the body — and the phrase has since appeared in graffiti, political pamphlets, and at least one court filing.

story hooks
  • A player character discovers an original Bone Weather chip sewn into the lining of a dead contact's jacket — someone is willing to kill to recover it, and it's not clear if they want to destroy it or profit from it.
  • A Tier 3 academic is writing a suppressed history of the 2191 labor actions and needs authenticated copies of Bone Weather tracks to verify the timeline — but acquiring them means moving through Shelf networks that don't trust outsiders.
  • One of the anonymous artists on Bone Weather has been identified by a Vantablack Media investigator; the collective needs to warn them before the cease-and-desist becomes something worse.
