Artists who practice the genre, called Salvagers, use forensic audio reconstruction tools to excavate these signals and reassemble them into compositions that carry the authentic emotional imprints of their original human sources. The result is music that sounds like memory itself: looping, incomplete, occasionally breaking into clarity before dissolving back into static.

The genre carries an almost liturgical weight in communities that have experienced mass disconnection events or infrastructure collapses. Some Salvagers are regarded as quasi-spiritual figures, accused of both exploitation and preservation depending on whose neural residue they are working with.
